School tax credit<br>helps local students

GCNP — In what could be called a loan to the state with no interest, the Arizona school tax credit program benefits the local school.

Arizonans can contribute up to $200 to public schools for extracurricular activities and then deduct that amount directly from their state income taxes through a tax credit.

Bruce Smith, Grand Canyon School financial assistant, said the district has received $10,400 over the past two years through the tax credit — $5,300 in 1998 and $5,100 in 1999.

Payments must be received by the school before Dec. 31, but because that date falls on a Sunday this year, Smith recommends contributors act before that.

“The sooner the better,” Smith said. “Before the week of Chris-tmas, that would be wonderful.”

The final office day for the school will be Dec. 28. Forms mailed must be postmarked on Dec. 31 or sooner.

The tax credit reduces a household’s taxes up to the limit of their liability. A husband and wife can only take a $200 credit.

The contributor must designate where they want the money to go.

“We have five categories here,” Smith said. “First, you must choose whether it goes to the elementary or high school. Then you choose which activity.”

On a form the school provides for contributors to fill out, the extracurricular activity categories include athletics, music, art, field trips and clubs.

Contributors can split the donation up between different categories, such as $100 toward athletics and $100 toward art.

Smith said one way money will be used this coming year will be to buy basketball uniforms.

Upon payment of the donation, the person will receive a copy of the receipt which can be filed with their tax return.
