Judge rules Edes’ election will stand

In a brief phone interview Tuesday from Flagstaff, Bruce Smith, Williams City attorney, said Ken Edes will be seated as mayor in June.

According to Smith, Judge Fred Newton, Arizona Superior Court Division 2, questioned the validity of only four out of 24 contested voters at a court hearing Tuesday morning. The list was submitted as the basis of lawsuit contesting the outcome of the March 14 Williams primary election. In the primary, Ken Edes, with 400 votes, nabbed the majority of the 789 ballots cast and defeated opponent Chuck Brookbank for mayor.

However, Brookbank, with 350 votes, filed a lawsuit which contended 24 of those who voted did so illegally since they lived outside Williams City limits. Judge Newton ruled the four voters he found questionable were not enough to change the outcome of the primary.
