MAYORAL CANDIDATES
John Moore
Why are you running for mayor?
I’ve been mayor for several years. I’ve got some projects and work that I want to continue – street improvements and we are putting the final touches on our situation with water. I’d like to see that completed.
What are the main issues facing Williams in the coming term?
We’ve worked on a lot of issues. I think the most important issue coming up in this election is the home rule vote. I’d like people to have a good understanding of what home rule is. Basically, it lets us control our own destiny. If we let the state dictate to us how to spend our money, we’re going to end up cutting a lot of services to the community. It would cut our budget almost in half. Other issues are street and sidewalk repairs, our water system is improving and we need to do some work on our electrical system. As a whole the city is better off than it has been for many years.
If you received a $1 million grant for the city, what would you do with it?
I would develop an account for a clean and beautiful type program where people could apply for grants to paint their homes, clean up their yards — even some businesses need some work. Some of them look kind of trashy. I think a clean community instills pride in ourselves and helps the economy thrive.
What is your occupational and educational background?
Most of my adult life I’ve been involved in some form of city government. I’ve done everything from police officer to police chief and I’ve been in the mayor for several years in Williams. My education varies in many different areas involving government operations.
