Ash Fork Spartans soccer fifth in region
ASH FORK, Ariz – Despite a loss to the Chino Valley Cougars Oct. 6, the Ash Fork Spartans are ranked fifth in the 2A Region 1 Central soccer standings and thirteenth in the 2A Conference with a 4-2 regional record, and 7-8 in conference play.
The Spartans had a tough game against the Cougars with a 7-0 loss. The Cougars are leading Region 1 Central in the standings and are now ranked third in the 2A Conference with a 4-0 regional record, and a 13-1 record in the conference.
The team is led by seniors Lucas Escobedo, Ryan Gutierrez, and Jose Cohen. Freshman Alex Keele has 19 goals so far this season and is ranked second in the 2A Region 1 Central. He is followed by sophomore Cesar Acosta with nine goals and freshman Christopher Vasquez with four.
Goalie Escobedo has had 80 saves so far this season, only allowing 23 goals by the opposing teams. He averages 7.3 saves per match.
The team has beat the following Region 1 Central teams: Leading Edge Academy, Arizona Charter Academy, Grand Canyon and Northland Prep Academy. They lost to Phoenix Country Day School and Chino Valley.
The Spartans next face Camp Verde Oct. 18 in Camp Verde.
