Vikings and Spartans 2016 baseball and softball seasons end

WILLIAMS, Ariz. - The Williams Vikings and Ash Fork Spartans ended their seasons each with a short state playoff run.

The Spartan baseball team made it to the third round of the state playoffs after having a bye in the first round and defeating Mojave Accelerated 14-1. They faced off with Miami High School May 6 and lost 5-1.

The Vikings baseball team made it to the second round of the state playoffs with a bye in the first round and an 8-6 loss to Ray April 30.

Bagdad beat Bisbee and Pima beat Miami May 7 to advance to the championship game May 14.

The Spartans ended the season with a 22-4 overall record and a 7-1 section record. They were ranked 146 in the state and sixth in Division V rankings. They finished second in their section behind Bagdad.

The Vikings ended the season with a 16-12 overall record and a 5-2 section record. They were ranked 171 in the state and 11 in Division V rankings. They finished third in their section behind Ash Fork.

Both teams are young with the Spartans only losing two seniors, Ashton Atkinson and Antonio Cisneros, to graduation and the Vikings losing Alex Galvan and Jesus Mejia.

Atkinson, Cesar Acosta and Rian Gutierrez were the stats leaders for most of the categories for Division V in 2016.

The Lady Vikings finished the season with a 10-12 overall record and a 5-3 section record. They were ranked fifth in their section, 20 in Division V, and 195 in the state.

The Lady Spartans finished the season with a 6-13 overall record and a 1-7 section record. They were ranked eighth in their section, 34 in Division V, and 232 in the state.

Spartan Lauren Hume ended the season ranked 8 in Division V for strikeouts with 59 on the season. Viking Carli Grantham ended the season ranked 8 in Division V for wins at 8-4.
