Free luncheon Sept. 19

Soldiers of the Cross is sponsoring a free luncheon Sept. 19 at the Community United Methodist Church. Teens and adults are invited to hear Robin Gutshall give an inspiring presentation called "Against All Odds," from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with prizes, food, worship and teaching.

Saturday Market Sept. 19

A Saturday Market takes place Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the porch of The Open Studios, 106 S. Ninth Street, behind the Family Dollar Store. The market features all homemade, handmade or homegrown items.

VFW seeks new members

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary to Matthew James Broehm Post 12128 is looking for new members. At the national convention in June 2015, a rule was passed saying that the auxiliaries may seek male relatives of VFW eligible veterans for membership. All fathers, husbands, sons, grandsons and brothers can now join. Those interested may pick up applications at the VFW Post, 117 W. Route 66, Suite 160, by the door.

Big Buck Contest

A Big Buck contest and raffle is open to all units south of Grand Canyon. The hunter to score the widest buck (outside to outside) will win a PSE Surge Bow with full package.

The contest ends Jan. 31, 2016 and the drawing takes place Feb. 1 at The Outdoor Store.

POW/MIA recognition Sept. 18

The VFW Auxiliary Matthew J. Broehm VFW Post 12128 will have a table set up at the National Bank of Arizona in Williams in observance of POW/MIA Recognition Day, Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with its Hero Tree.

Any veteran is invited to come by and place a dog tag in their honor on the Hero Tree. Donations are also accepted to honor veterans.

The Post is also selling sponsorships for Wreaths Across America. Again this year, if someone buys two wreaths, the Post gets one free. The wreaths will be placed at the Prescott National Memorial Cemetery Dec. 12.

Spaghetti dinner Sept. 27

The local chapter of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is hosting its second annual community spaghetti dinner and pie and cake auction fundraiser at the hall at St. Joseph's Church Sept. 27.

The dinner is open to all members of the community and will begin at 3 p.m. A pie and cake silent auction will follow. The hall is located at 900 W. Grant Ave. The suggested donation for the dinner is $5.

2015 Williams Fire Dept Big Buck Contest

Williams Fire Department is having a fundraising Big Buck Contest. Proceeds go towards fire prevention programs. Eligible hunters are general rifle and October junior rifle deer. Oath Keepers meeting Sept. 12

Oath Keepers' Community Preparedness Team (CPT) Project works to bring community emergency services together. The group meets Sept. 12 at 10 a.m. at Wild West Junction.

Cancer Support Group

The Cancer Support group meets the second Sunday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Williams Health Care Center.

Williams Clean and Beautiful fall clean-up day Sept. 19

The City of Williams, The Chamber, and Williams Clean and Beautiful committee have organized a fall clean-up day for Sept 19. Volunteers should meet at 9 a.m. at the Chamber building. Please bring a hat and gloves. Coffee, pastries and garbage bags will be provided.

Al-Anon meets on Tuesdays

A new Al-Anon meeting takes place Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at Walker Hall, St. John's Episcopal Lutheran Church at Second and Grant in Williams.

Williams High School Athletics Towel Drive

The Kiwanis Club of Williams is collecting towels to donate to the high school. Towels may be given to Phillip Echeverria at the high school or Carol Glassburn will pick them up. She can be reached at (928) 635-4503.

Williams Kiwanis Club seeking food bank donations

The Kiwanis Club is seeking items needed at the food bank. The food bank needs canned vegetables, diapers, laundry detergent, toilet paper, tissues, hand soap, toiletries, peanut butter, canned beans, canned fruit, canned tuna/salmon and cereal. Free firewood

Arizona Game and Fish (AZGFD) has opened the Lamar Haines Wildlife Area for free fuel woodcutting. The area is located off Snow Bowl Road in Flagstaff. A permit must be obtained from AZGFD in Flagstaff prior to cutting.

Golf Course Closed Sept. 9

The Elephant Rocks Golf Course and Clubhouse will be closed Sept. 8 and 9 so staff can aerate the greens. The golf course will reopen for play at 2 p.m. Sept. 9.

4th annual Scarecrow Contest

The Williams-Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a scarecrow contest for business owners October 1-30. Business owners need to submit an entry form with the chamber by Sept. 21 to participate. More information is available at (928) 635-0273.

Big Brothers Big Sisters in Williams needs adults

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff is once again matching student "littles" with adult "bigs" in Williams. The group meets every Thursday at Williams Elementary-Middle School from 3:45-5:45 p.m. Students are waiting to be matched with an adult. Williams High School reunion

High School After-Game Gathering Place

Anna's Grand Canyon Cafe in conjunction with Williams Alliance is extending their hours on Friday after home football games. The Alliance is hoping the cafe will provide a safe haven for students wanting to gather after games.
