Soldiers of the Cross luncheon Sept. 6

Soldiers of the Cross will put on their annual luncheon at the Community Methodist Church Sept. 6

The event takes place from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. with Mexican food and speakers. Daycare is provided.

Year of the Jubilee is this year's theme. Those that look up the meaning of jubilee will be entered to win the prize of the day.

Pancake breakfast Saturday

The Sherwood Forest Estates Fire Department Auxiliary will put on its annual Labor Day Weekend fundraiser pancake breakfast Saturday.

Breakfast will be served from 8-10 a.m. and donations are accepted. A 50-50 raffle will take place and T-shirts are available for purchase. All proceeds support the volunteer fire department.

To get to Sherwood Forest take I-40 to Exit 171, back east one mile to the Sherwood Forest Road, then right three miles to the fire house at 450 S. Little John Road.

Market Saturday outside The Open Studios

A market takes place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the porch of The Open Studios at 106 S. Ninth St.

Vendors will be on hand selling homemade, handmade and homegrown local wildflower honey, Arizona pecans and produce, baked and canned goods, candies, salsa, wooden bowls, baskets, jewelry and more.

Hunters education class Sept. 20, 21 and 27

A hunters education class will take place Sept. 20, 21 and 27. Sign up is Sept. 13 from 1-3 p.m. at 117 W. Route 66, Suite 160.

Friends of the Williams Aquatic Center golf tournament Sept. 13

Registration forms are available for the Friends of the Williams Aquatic Center (FWAC) golf tournament at Elephant Rocks Golf Course or from any FWAC board member.

The tournament will take place on Sept. 13. The two-person scramble tournament will have an 8:30 a.m. shot gun start. Fun, prizes, and a delicious barbecue lunch will be available to participants.

Those who do not wish to play can support the Friends by sponsoring a hole for $100.

WPD earns traffic safety grant

In conjunction with the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety, the Williams Police Department is announcing the award of a traffic safety grant dedicated to traffic safety use.

The grant has been dedicated to the fifth consecutive year of the Back to School Zone Enforcement Detail scheduled during Aug. 11-18. During this time, the Williams Police Department will strictly enforce the school zones for speed and lane violations. Additionally, seatbelt and child restraint enforcement is a priority in this safety campaign.

The Williams Police Department asks that everyone obey all school signage to keep students safe.

New cancer support group

A new cancer support group will start meeting on the first Sunday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Williams Health Care Center, 301 S. Seventh St. The group is open to cancer survivors, the newly diagnosed, those in treatment, caregivers or anyone who would like to encourage people dealing with any form of the disease. Chamber mixer Sept. 5 at Rodeo Barn

The Williams-Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce will put on a membership networking mixer from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Williams Rodeo Barn, 501 E. Rodeo Road.

The Williams Kiwanis Club will host the mixer and has invited many local service organizations to participate and share their goals and needs. The mixer is open to all, and will include appetizers and raffle prizes.

The event will benefit the Williams Food Bank and attendees are asked to bring canned food items to help stock up for the holidays. More information is available from the chamber at (928) 635-0273.

American Legion Auxiliary looking for new members

The American Legion Auxiliary of Williams is looking for new members.

The group meets monthly and supports the American Legion Post No. 13.

Movie tonight at Rec Center

Volunteer tax preparer training available

In 2013, Coconino County Community Service, in partnership with United Way of Northern Arizona, initiated a community service program. For the 2014 tax season, Community Services prepared tax returns for 214 limited income residents of Coconino County. These returns brought in $143,332 back into the pockets of county residents, which included $47,463 of Earned Income Tax Credits.

Community Services will provide tax preparation services again for the upcoming tax season from January through mid-April of 2015. Training will be provided for volunteer tax preparers, greeters and screeners. Those who would like to volunteer for the program in the Williams area and help our community should contact Barbara Frakes or Norma Gallegos at Community Services at (928) 679-7425.

Community Fund raffle on through Sept. 15

The Gallery in Williams is a proud partner of The Greater Williams Community Fund. They sponsor a raffle every six weeks with the proceeds going to the fund. The present raffle is a feather metal sculpture by Tom Williams. People can stop by and purchase tickets for a chance to win this beautiful piece of art. Tickets are $2 each or 6 for $10. The drawing will be on Sept. 15. The Gallery in Williams is at 145 W. Route 66.

Bountiful baskets available in Williams

Williams residents can get fresh produce at an affordable price through the Bountiful Baskets program. According to the program's flyer, "Bountiful Baskets is a fruit and vegetable buying co-op in which participants pool their money to get the best quality produce at wholesale price." The cost to participate is $15 plus fees, with the option of getting certified organic produce for an additional $10. The selection of produce usually includes apples, bananas, salad greens, and seasonal produce, but varies from week to week. Organizers receive fresh fruits and vegetables every two weeks at the Mercantile Mall, 109 S. Ninth St. Those interested in participating should create an account at www.bountifulbaskets.org, read the FAQs, log on to participate between Monday at noon and Tuesday at 10 p.m. and bring their contribution confirmation to the pickup location.

Diabetes support group information

The Williams Diabetes Support Group meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Williams Healthcare Center. The meetings are free. More information is available from Kate Cornell at (928) 221-0624.

WHS class of 1964 to host all class reunion Sept. 5-7

The Williams High School (WHS) class of 1964 will host the annual all-alumni reunion Sept. 5-7. Everyone is invited to attend.

On Sept. 5 a no-host event will take place at Elephant Rocks Golf Course. On Sept. 6 an event will take place at the Legion Hut with dinner catered by the WHS Culinary Arts class. On Sept. 7 at noon a picnic gathering will take place at the Cataract Lake picnic area on Country Club Road.

Thrift shop has a drop off box

The Bill Williams Senior Thrift Shop has a drop off box. It is the red box at the northwest corner of the parking lot.

The thrift shop appreciates all donations but cannot sell large televisions, furniture, mattresses or kitchen appliances. Items donated should be serviceable.

The drop off is always open for donations. During store hours, items may be left at the store. Store hours are 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-2:30 p.m. weekdays excluding holidays.
