Clowns educate and entertain for fire prevention
PARKS, Ariz. - National Fire Prevention Week 2011 kicked off at the Maine Consolidated School in Parks Oct. 11 with fire safety messages from clowns. The Ponderosa Fire Department (PFD) coordinated the event, which provides fire prevention education mixed with entertainment.
Fire education specialists from the Pine-Strawberry and Summit Fire Departments put on the show and will be conducting additional shows for other schools in the Flagstaff area. Educators in the fire service have found that the clown programs capture children's attention and they can then focus on getting out important fire safety information. The theme for Fire Prevention Week 2011 is: "Protect Your Family from Fire." and is all about keeping ourselves, our families, and our communities safer from fire.
Unattended cooking, followed by heating equipment, are the top two leading causes of injury related fires. PFD officials remind everyone to please stay in the kitchen while cooking and keep your chimney clean.
