Government Prairie burn scheduled for Wednesday

WILLIAMS, Ariz. - Kaibab National Forest managers have added another prescribed fire to the list of potential projects on the Williams Ranger District. Depending on conditions, crews may conduct the 1,800-acre Government Prairie grassland burn Wednesday and Thursday. The unit is located 16 miles northeast of Williams, southeast of Government Mountain.

The weather forecast shows light winds and above normal temperatures next week. Smoke will be visible along portions of I-40 during operations. Managers expect smoke to settle in the local area overnight.

Crews continue to monitor conditions across the forest for various prescribed fire projects. Prescribed burns are used to improve forest health, enhance wildlife habitat, and return fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem.
