Letter: In lieu of flowers

To the editor:

One of my dearest friends was laid to rest last week. I suspect that there are many in Williams who could say the same thing about Dorothy Schulte. I was lucky enough to be her neighbor when I first moved to Williams in 1998. That was when her beloved Jack was still alive. I spent many a day relaxing in their good company. We became close friends, in fact Dorothy said she was adopting our family and from then on we shared many family celebrations for holidays and birthdays with the whole Schulte clan. She was very generous that way.

I couldn't make back for her funeral and in lieu of flowers I am writing this letter. In life I brought Dorothy flowers at every opportunity, whether picking a bouquet from the garden or a quick stop at the flower show on my way out for afternoon coffee. Dorothy loved flowers and I loved her.

We moved, first into town and then far away to Texas, (which is where Dorothy grew up) but we remained in close touch and visited when we could. I always chose to stay with Dorothy because I knew that one day all too soon she would no longer be there when I came back. That day has come and I will miss her dearly but she has impacted my life and will live on in my heart forever. She is my hero in many ways and we would all do well to strive to the caliber of person that Dorothy was.

Dorothy magnified her goodness by 10 leaving her living legacy among us and Williams is fortunate to have several of her children walking among you, which in itself a blessing.

So here is to Dorothy, off on her next great adventure!
