You can still contribute to Grad Night

Contributions are still being accepted for Williams High School's Grad Night 2010. The event has received generous donations from Williams, Ash Fork, Grand Canyon and Flagstaff residents and businesses. There are two events coming up that will benefit Grad Night.

Everyone is welcome to participate. Pizza Hut is sponsoring a fundraiser on Tuesday. All you have to do is eat pizza. Bring in this notice or see a senior for a voucher and 20 percent of your check will go to Grad Night.

Conoco's Car Wash is contributing $3 of every car wash between Monday and May 27. All you need to do is enter 1660 before each wash for Grad Night to receive the donation. Parents Who Care and WHS seniors appreciate your assistance and expresses thanks to those who have contributed.

Sign up for golf tournament

The Williams Volunteer Fire Department is planning their 10th Annual Fire Prevention Golf Tournament. The tournament begins at 1 p.m. June 5 with a shotgun start at Elephant Rocks Golf Course. Proceeds will help buy a fire prevention trailer and restore Rescue 7 for fire prevention.

The cost per four-man team is $325 or $80 per player prior to June 1. After June 1, teams are $375 or $90 per player. All entry forms are due by June 1. Mulligans will be sold for $2.50 per person or $10 per team prior to the shotgun start. The hole in one on the 18th hole wins $10,000. This year's tourney has more raffle prizes than ever. Raffle tickets are one for $1 or five for $6.

A barbecue dinner will follow the tournament at 5 p.m. at the American Legion, 425 W. Grant Ave. Tournament golfers eat free. Non-golfers eat for $5 per plate. A dance begins at 9 p.m. at the Sultana Bar, 301 W. Route 66. Cover charges are $5 for couples, $3 for singles and tournament golfers enter free.

July 4 barbecue cook-off needs amateurs

Amateur contestants are needed for the July 4 barbecue cook-off in downtown Williams. Applications are available online at

www.NAzBBQ.com.Vendors are also needed. Contestants and vendors are urged to register by May 31.

Over $10,000 in cash, prizes and trophies will be awarded during a triple crown barbecue event July 3. Chuck Vaughn of Cactus Canyon Old Time Photo is working with the Williams Main Street Association to have a professional barbecue contest in Williams July 3-4. Pepsi and Fat Tire are presenting sponsors of this event.

Additional sponsors are necessary to make this happen since the bigger the prize pot, the more teams that will travel to Williams for the competition. The event will be a state championship and also a Triple Crown event where professional barbecue teams will earn points.

Barbecue categories for the July 3 cook-off include chicken, pork ribs, pork, beef brisket and best booth. Categories for the July 4 amateur cook-off include best wings, pork ribs and cook's choice.

Proceeds will benefit northern Arizona charities. Local charities are invited raise money through raffles.

Pancake breakfast fundraiser Saturday

The Williams Home School Group will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser this Saturday from 8-10 a.m. at American Flyer Coffee Company. All donations received will go towards sports equipment, fieldtrips etc.

Health and safety fair Friday

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) and is hosting a health and safety fair 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday at Maine Consolidated School, 10 Spring Valley Rd.

The whole family is invited to attend this free event featuring tips and activities focusing on health and safety. Visit with Smokey the Bear and view K-9 demonstrations. Enjoy free refreshments and door prizes.

Cataract field trip planned

Kaibab National Forest personnel are planning a field trip to the City thinning project near Cataract Lake on June 5. The 138-acre project involves fuels reduction activities such as thinning, pruning and hand piling on 138 acres on the Williams Ranger District.

The goal of the field trip is to provide information about the thinning project scheduled to begin approximately July 6. Resource specialists will lead the site visit, explain the objectives of the project and answer questions about forest land management practices.

The field trip will begin at 11 a.m. and last approximately one hour. Anyone interested in participating in the field trip should RSVP to Punky Moore, (928) 635-5653 by Monday.

Friends of the Aquatic Center needs assistance

Defensive driving class Friday and Saturday

The Williams Rotary Club is preparing for the upcoming second annual teen defensive driving class. The class is open to all teens with or without a driver's permit or license. Chamber board meets Friday

The Williams-Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce Board will meet 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday in the Williams High School culinary arts room, 440 S. Seventh St. Everyone is invited to attend.

AARP driving safety class Tuesday

An AARP driving safety class will be held 12:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday at city hall, 113 S. First St. For more information or to register, call (623) 696-8992.

Swap meet resumes Memorial Day weekend

The Williams Swap Meet will resume May 28 and will run throughout the summer Friday through Monday. Sponsored by the Williams Kiwanis Club, the swap meet is open dawn through dusk. The swap meet is located at the west end of Williams just west of the Williams Justice Center.

Eat pancakes May 29

Hungry? Sherwood Forest Estates Volunteer Fire Department's Auxiliary is hosting the annual Memorial Day Weekend All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast 8-10 a.m. May 29 at the firehouse.

The recommended donation is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 3-10. Bring a little extra to purchase a terrific T-shirt and raffle tickets. Proceeds benefit the firefighters. To get there, travel Interstate 40 to Exit 171 (Deer Farm Road), drive south to Sherwood Forest Road and travel two miles to the firehouse.

Contestants wanted for pageant

The Williams-Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce is seeking young ladies ages 14-19 interested in competing in this year's Miss Williams Route 66 pageant. The deadline to enter is June 2. For more information, contact Pimi Bennett at (928) 635-0273, ext. 203.

Concealed weapon class June 5

The Juniper Woods Gun Club is offering a concealed carry weapon (CCW) class at 8 a.m. on June 5 at the Ash Fork Community Center. The class will last 9-10 hours and will be divided between classroom phase and range time for shooting qualification. The cost of the class is $85 and the Department of Public Safety application fee is $60.
