Free cancer screenings April 14

WILLIAMS - Women of Coconino County who meet qualifying requirements can receive free breast and cervical cancer screenings through the Well Woman HealthCheck Program offered by North Country HealthCare. The screenings will be held on April 14 at the Williams Health Care Center, 301 S. Seventh St.

The Well Woman HealthCheck Program at North Country HealthCare educates women throughout northern Arizona and refers them free mammograms and clinical breast exams in their own communities. The purpose is to provide access to quality cancer screening services for Arizona women.

Since 1998, the Well Woman HealthCheck Program at North Country has reached more than 17,000 women with information about the importance of early detection of breast cancer and has referred nearly 7,500 women for mammograms and clinical breast exams.

Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the U.S., and the leading single cause of death overall in women between the ages of 40 and 55. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 3,470 new cases of breast cancer were detected in Arizona in 2009 and 740 lives were lost. Nationwide, there is a new diagnosis every three minutes and a death from breast cancer every fourteen minutes. While advances have been made in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure, early detection still affords the best opportunity for successful treatment. Programs such as Well Woman HealthCheck help ensure that all women, including the medically underserved, have access to early detection, information and options.

This program is funded by Arizona Department of Health Services, the Avon Foundation for Women, and the Phoenix Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. To find out if you qualify for a free mammogram or Pap call Noelle at (928)213-6104 or 1-800-687-5798 ext. 2373.
