WILLIAMS - According to officials with the Coconino County Health Department (CCHD), flu activity has been relatively low in recent weeks but will likely pick up as the winter season continues.

CCHD Director Barbara Worgess said in a press release issued last week that flu activity usually peaks in the middle of winter and that the flu season often stretches in to the late spring.

"Flu is unpredictable and we don't know how wide spread the flu will be for the remainder of the flu season," Worgess said. She went on to encourage everyone to get vaccinated for H1N1 flu and seasonal flu, especially those with underlying health conditions that could cause influenza complications.

CCHD officials hope that more people will get vaccinated for H1N1 to prevent a potential third wave of the disease. Parents are encouraged to vaccinate all children 10-years-old or younger with a second dose of the H1N1 vaccine with a recommended interval between doses of at least 28 days.

According to Williams Health Care Center Director Cindy Christman, H1N1 vaccinations have become readily available in Williams.

"We've been getting shipments since November," she said. "In the beginning, in October and November, we were having some difficulty getting the vaccine but around the first of December we started receiving regular shipments."

Christman went on to say that the health care center has both the injectible and nasal spray H1N1 vaccine available to all ages with enough supply to cover all those in Williams desiring a vaccination. Earlier restrictions regarding those eligible for the vaccine have been lifted.

"They've opened up that third tier so pretty much anyone can get an H1N1 vaccine," Christman said.

Along with flu vaccinations, the CCHD recom-

mends washing your hands frequently to prevent the spread of the flu and other wintertime illnesses. Covering your mouth with your upper sleeve when coughing and staying home when ill are also recommended.
