Crafters needed

Crafters are needed for the Holiday Craft Show, scheduled for Nov. 28. The craft show will be held at the Sultana Theater. Proceeds from the show will benefit the proposed animal holding facility in Williams. For more information on the event, call Nadine at (928) 863-0421.

Eat pancakes Saturday

Hungry? Sherwood Forest Estates Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary is hosting their annual Labor Day weekend all-you-can-eat Pancake Breakfast from 8-10 a.m. on Saturday.

The recommended donation is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 3-10. Bring a little extra for our terrific T-shirts and raffle tickets. Proceeds benefit Sherwood Forest firefighters. Come on over to Sherwood Forest, Interstate 40, Exit 171 I-40 (Deer Farm Road), south to Sherwood Forest Road, two miles to the firehouse.

Bake sale in Parks

The Ponderosa Fire District Auxiliary will be holding a bake sale fundraiser at 7 a.m. Saturday at the Parks in the Pines General Store. The General Store is located at the intersection of Old Route 66 and Spring Valley Road. All proceeds benefit the Ponderosa Fire District Auxiliary. Book sale Saturday

The Ponderosa Fire District Auxiliary is holding their third used book sale fundraiser 7 a.m.-noon on Saturday at the Parks Feed and Mercantile. The Mercantile is located just north of Interstate 40, Exit 178. Over 1,000 titles are available, with many genres represented. All proceeds benefit the Ponderosa Fire District Auxiliary. Dispose of tires, electronics

Old electronics and tires will be accepted 9 a.m.-noon Sept. 12 at the Bob Dean Rodeo Grounds. Grand Canyon Railway and Williams Clean and Beautiful have teamed up to provide a community electronics and tire drop off day.

Green-Tech Assets, will be available with a tractor trailer - free of charge - to collect electronic waste from the community. Green-Tech will accept "IT" and communications electronics, consumer electronics, electronic components, miscellaneous electronic items and ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Televisions will not be accepted. Small car and truck tires will be accepted. No large truck or off-road tires will be accepted. Tires must be off the rims.

Homeschool group to meet Sept. 14

The Williams Christian Homeschool group is having a start up parents only meeting at 7 p.m. on Sept. 14 at the American Flyer coffee shop on Route 66. The group welcomes new and returning members. Learn more about the group and the schedule of events or the year.

Historic photos wanted

The Williams Public Library and the Kaibab National Forest are working together to collect historic photos, slides or negatives of photos depicting Williams and the surrounding area.

On Oct. 17 and 24, Nov. 7 and 14 and Dec. 5 and 12, the Kaibab is going to set up a computer and scanner in the library to scan historic photos, negatives or slides. Once scanned, the photos will be housed in the library so they will be available for the public, historians or other researchers. Copies will be burned to a CD and given to the owner of the collection for their personal use.

If you have old photos, negatives or slides of Williams, Ash Fork, Parks, Valle, Tusayan, the Grand Canyon, or places in the forest such as Laws Spring or the top of Bill Williams Mountain, make an appointment to bring them in to be scanned. This is a great opportunity to save those old photos.

Two mixers in September

The Williams-Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors are having two mixers in September. The mixers are open to all.

The Ambassadors will be at Wild West Junction 5-7 p.m. Sept. 18. The mixer is hosted by Williams Habitat for Humanity, who is the recipient of the 50/50 drawing.

Join host John Holst at the Red Garter Bed & Bakery 5-7 p.m. Sept. 18 as the Ambassadors celebrate the 30th anniversary of that establishment. The Ambassadors are the recipients of the 50/50 drawing.

The benefit draw will go to the Williams Chamber Ambassadors.

Mexican Independence Day celebration Sept. 16

The Williams Alliance Multicultural Committee presents a Mexican Independence Day celebration Sept. 19. The event will include music, food, and judging for the Queen "Reyna" candidates at the Chamber of Commerce parking lot from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Mexican Independence Day queen will be crowned during a dance at the Sultana Theater from 8 p.m. to midnight. Cost for the Chamber of Commerce event is $2. Cost for the Sultana Theater event is $10 per person or $15 per couple. Slow down in school zones

The Williams Police Department reminds citizens to slow down in school zones. The WPD will be monitoring school zones heavily and will be citing anyone exceeding the speed limit in school zones.

GED, ELS classes offered

Coconino Community College will be offering ESL, English as a Second Language, classes Monday and Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 and GED-Prep classes Wednesday and Thursday evening from 5:30 to 8:30. CCC is located at 636 S. Seventh St. Call 635-1325 for more information.

School offers spirit bus for away games

Community members now have a ride to the Williams High School Vikings away games, thanks to the addition of a spirit bus. The bus will be available for out-of-town games scheduled for Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The cost is $5 per person and does not include admission and food. The bus is available on a first come, first served basis.

While the bus is available to students and community members, all passengers must be freshman age or older. No junior high aged children will be allowed without parental supervision. Passengers will be segregated by gender.

Meals on Wheels fundraiser planned

An evening of live music featuring The Sweet Lemon and dancing is planned for 8 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Sultana Theater. The cost is a donation of $5 and 100 percent of all donations will benefit the Williams Senior Center's Meals on Wheels.

The Sweet Lemon is a popular band that includes members Dennis and Barb Nelson, Bryant McGee, Ed Garibay, Cookie Dent and Jon Barrett. The band played at last year's Williams High School's reunion and also at the Cool Country Cruise-In.

The Meals on Wheels program provides isolated and frail seniors in Williams a full lunch and visit each day. Last year, 4,000 meals were served to the city of Williams' senior homebound population.

1959 class reunion planned

The Williams High School class of 1959 is having their 50th anniversary reunion and is inviting alumni to attend. The reunion will be held the weekend following Labor Day, Sept. 11-13, at the Quality Inn Mountain Ranch Resort. Several registration packets have already been mailed out. Mini clocks available

A limited number of miniature town clocks are available for sale. The clocks are being sold to defray the cost of landscaping the area around the town clock, located at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Grand Canyon Boulevard.

The working miniature clocks are currently available for $250 each. Organizers say the clocks will not be ordered again. The miniatures were produced specifically for the Williams Town Clock project.

Historical photo available

The July 4 historical reenactment photo is available for sale online through the Williams-Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce at williamschamber.com. The photos are also available at Cactus Canyon Old Time Photo and Shipping Depot, 120 W. Route 66.

Moonset Pit open Saturday

Moonset Pit will be open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sept. 19.

The pit provides local residents the opportunity to dispose of natural forest debris, such as tree limbs and pine needles, for free and is supported by the Kaibab National Forest, local fire departments and the communities of Parks, Bellemont and Sherwood Forest Estates. Moonset Pit is located just west of parks on a dirt road just east of Spitz Springs, on the north side of old Route 66.

Items cannot be bagged. Remember, only natural forest debris will be accepted, no construction material or trash.

Three Sisters Pit open on select dates

Williams Volunteer Fire Department firefighters will open Three Sisters Pit on the second Saturday of each month. Three Sisters Pit is located a few miles north of Williams on Forest Road 124 (Country Club Road). Three Sisters will be open on Sept. 12.

This community service is provided by the Kaibab National Forest in an effort to assist local residents in disposing of debris from defensible space projects. Fire department members will staff the pit. The pit will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month from June through October.

Only natural woody debris will be accepted. Items not accepted are garbage, dimension lumber and other building materials etc.

Barrels, bins now available

The Williams Clean and Beautiful Committee is now selling rain barrels and compost bins. Rain barrels cost $40 and compost bins are $45.

Barrels and bins can be purchased at Williams Mountain Nursery, 225 W. Grant Ave., by asking for Carla. If paying by check, make it payable to Williams Clean and Beautiful.

The Williams Kiwanis Swap Meet is offered weekly Friday through Sunday. The swap meet is located at the west end of Williams next to the courthouse.

Fuelwood permits available

Permits for gathering dead and down firewood for personal use on the Williams Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest can be obtained for $5 per cord.

The minimum purchase is $20. Six cords per household is the maximum amount of wood that can be purchased per season. Firewood gathering season will be open through Dec. 13. Permits will be available weekdays at the following locations the Williams Ranger District, 742 S. Clover Hill Rd. 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday. For more information, call (928) 635-5600.

Support available for cancer survivors

The Williams Area Cancer Survivors' Group offers support for cancer survivors, family members and caregivers the second Thursday of each month. The next meeting begins at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Williams Health Care Center, 301. S. Seventh St.

Join Williams Group Fitness

Aerobics instructor Georgeanna Koenig offers aerobics at the Williams Health Care Center, 301 S. Seventh St.

She teaches light challenge classes each week from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and energizer classes from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of each week as well.

There is no charge for the classes, but donations are welcome.

Box tops needed

Box Tops for Education, a program sponsored by General Mills, remains under way locally. Collect box tops from General Mills products and Campbell's Soup labels and help purchase school supplies for classrooms at the Williams Elementary-Middle School.

On General Mills products, the words "Box Tops for Education" must appear or the labels are worth nothing. On Campbell's Soup labels, the UPC code must be present.

Women on the Move meet weekly

Women on the Move is open to all women dedicated to recovery and actively working any 12-Step Program. There are no dues or fees as the group is self-supporting through their own contributions. The group meets on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Walker Hall, St. John's Episcopal Lutheran Church, corner of Second and Grant in Williams. This is a non-smoking meeting. Find a job tomorrow

The Arizona Workforce Connection/Job Service hosts a weekly One-Stop employment assistance service Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. at the Williams Public Library. Resume workshops are also offered. The services are free and available to all.
