Williams Police officer involved in fatal collision

DPS continues to investigate cause of accident

WILLIAMS - A marked police Ford sport utility vehicle driven by a Williams Police Department officer collided with a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, killing the motorcycle operator. The fatal collision occurred at approximately 5:40 p.m. yesterday on State Route 64 near milepost 185, which is north of Williams.

The Ford SUV was northbound on SR 64 when the driver began to make a U-turn to travel southbound when it was struck in the driver's door by a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The motorcycle was traveling northbound behind the SUV. The motorcycle operator was declared deceased on the scene as a result of injuries sustained from the impact of the collision. The driver of the SUV sustained injuries and was transported to a Flagstaff area hospital for treatment.

Investigators with the Department of Public Safety are currently in the process of determining the specific cause(s) of the collision and also whether impairment was or was not a factor. The drivers involved are not being identified at this time pending verification of names.

The collision caused the roadway to be closed for a short time while an investigation was conducted.
