Local judge receives prestigious award
WILLIAMS - On May 1 Williams Judge Bill Sutton Jr. received the Presiding Judge's Award. Sutton has been a judge for more than 18 years, serving as a Coconino County Justice of the Peace and Williams Magistrate. He received the award at the County Judges' Workshop in Page.
"Judge Bill Sutton preceded Judge Kolb as Presiding Justice of the Peace of Coconino County for 12 of his 18 years as a judge. In 2004, Judge Sutton received the Arizona Chief Justice's Outstanding Contribution to the Courts award, as well as the National Judges Association Kenneth L. MacEachern award as the outstanding non-attorney judge in the United States," Hendrix said. "He also served as president of the Arizona Justice of the Peace Association and was a member of the Arizona Judicial Council. But his work locally is what may be the most impressive.
"He has created and taught an Alcohol Impact Panel, he has implemented a good community service program, he has had in the past a tobacco education forum; but most of all is his work with the youth and in various capacities with the school district... the list goes on," Hendrix concluded.
Sutton says he was surprised when he received the award.
"I was very surprised and honored since we have a lot of good court people in Coconino County," Sutton said.
He added that while the award goes to the judge, it is actually his court staff that earned him the award.
"The staff makes the courts and our staff should be commended," Sutton said.
The award reads, "Presiding Judges Award to William B. Sutton Jr. - In recognition of your outstanding contributions to the Coconino County Courts through many years as Justice of the Peace and involvement in the state and national judicial leadership, you have enhanced the furtherance of justice, fairness and service to the public. You bring honor to us all."
