Fire department assists with recent burns

Williams Volunteer Fire Department firefighters assisted the Arizona State Forestry Division with slash pile burning on private property east of Lake Ellen on Jan. 22. These piles were part of a fuels reduction project coordinated through the Rural Communities Fuels Management Partnership (RCFMP). Approximately 20 acres of previously thinned and piled slash were burned.

RCFMP includes Kaibab National Forest; Arizona State Forestry Division; Coconino County; city of Williams; Sherwood Forest Estates, Ponderosa, Summit and Highlands fire districts; NAU Ecological Restoration Institute; and University of Arizona. RCFMP's goal is to reduce the threat that wildland fire poses to lives and communities by helping property owners near public lands implement tree-thinning treatments on their property.

Smoke was visible during the burn, however, most of it drifted to the west and north of town with very little impact to the residents.
