WILLIAMS - The Williams cheerleader hopefuls held a successful car wash over the weekend to raise funds to equip the squad, Coach Shana Brownlee said.

The team was able to purchase new pom poms, she added.

She is working to bring cheerleading back to Williams High School this year.

"We haven't had cheering in Williams for three years," Brownlee said.

In addition to the money raised from the car wash, the Kiwanis Club donated $200 to help the team out, Brownlee said.

Cheerleader try-outs began Monday and Brownlee hopes to have the team assembled next week.

She's not sure why interest in the activity seemed to fizzle out, but since there is no cheerleading squad it is not funded as part of the school budget.

So Brownlee and a core group of about eight girls have been soliciting support from area merchants to raise money to buy uniforms and pom-poms.

"The Kiwanis really helped us out," Brownlee added.

They hope to raise about $1,900, she said. Though she thinks they may need more since they are basically trying to rebuild the program from scratch, she added.

All girls - from freshmen to seniors - are invited to attend a mini cheerleading camp planned for July 28-31. There will also be a car wash fundraiser on Aug. 1.

The squad will cheer on the football, basketball volleyball teams. The cheering season runs roughly from August to March.

"The athletes are allowed to be cheerleaders, so in volleyball, the girls that aren't on the team will come to cheer," she said.
