The Williams High School (WHS) Vikings took a morale-boosting win last week after taking on Ash Fork during the Williams Homecoming celebration Oct. 10. The Vikings varsity team came out fighting, according to Coach Phillip Echeverria.

"Homecoming week is always a different week. It's so busy, the kids got so many things going on with float building and all the different activities here at school and so it was a different week. We came out fired up and put 20 points on the board right off the bat in the first quarter and then kind of had a rough second quarter and gave up a touchdown on a turnover," Echeverria said.

The Vikes went into halftime with a score of Williams 20, Ash Fork 8. When they returned to the field the Williams boys went on to play a strong second half of football. Williams scored an additional 14 points in the third quarter of play and another 15 points in the fourth quarter of play. The Vikes gave up a touchdown in the fourth to make the final score for the game Williams 49, Ash Fork 16.

"A lot of kids got some playing time, which is good," Echeverria said. "Some kids that didn't get to play very much went in there and stepped up and did a good job for us. The JV team actually scored a touchdown for us there in the fourth quarter. They showed they can execute when they get a chance to do that."

The Vikes currently stand at 4 and 3 overall and 2 and 2 in region. The Vikes will take on Fredonia Friday, in what Echeverria called the most important game of the year for the Williams High School football team.

"We need to secure a victory against Fredonia to guarantee a playoff spot for the week after. It will take a good week of practice, good concentration. I've been preaching holding on to the football and good execution and that's what it boils down to. We still turned the ball over, I think, two or three times against Ash Fork and we just cannot do that against a good football team, somebody that's really sound, like Joe City. They're going to take advantage of that like Joe City and Mogollon do. We'll have a week of concentration and execution and make sure that we're taking care of the football and good things should happen for us come Friday night. It will be Senior Night that night, with parents being recognized for the seniors' contribution the last four years. I look for a lot of support there and the kids being fired up to get after Fredonia," Echeverria said.

Parents of senior players in both the football and the Lady Vikings volleyball teams will be recognized at 6:30 p.m. at Williams High School

Junior Varsity

The Williams Junior Varsity (JV) squad took on Laughlin Oct. 9 and played a strong game against the Nevada team, in what Echeverria called a culmination of their work throughout the year. The JV Vikes took the win in the game with a final score of Williams 33, Laughlin 0. The JV boys finished the year with three wins and three losses for the season.

"They played well on both sides of the ball and special teams, just a lot of good things to look forward to with our younger kids coming up. I think a couple of ball games there we could have come out on top, but had some bad games, but I see some positive things down the road. I'm really proud of those boys that played on that JV team for us. We look forward to them adding to the varsity this year and years to come," Echeverria said.
