Letter: A Thanksgiving to treasure

To the editor:

During these difficult economic times it warms the heart to hear an interesting tale about "be careful for what you wish for," that fortunately for my wife Peggy and I ultimately ended well. A couple of years ago our son Chris joined the Arizona National Guard to gain a hefty bonus to enable him to purchase a new Jeep Wrangler 4X4 SUV. Previously he had labored hard in the California Conservation Corps for three years to earn a scholarship to college to become a certified EMT (Emergency Medical Technician.)

About 18 months ago the Guard sent him to Boot Camp in Georgia and subsequently to San Antonio, Texas to master triage techniques on the battlefield. Scuttlebutt within his group suggested deployment was imminent where their squad was to be consigned to the Arizona/Mexico border where illegal alien crossing activities had escalated into increased violence. Like so many Federal government organizations, the Army National Guard exercised muddled logic as they packed Chris and his group off to Iraq last December.

Chris arrived home safe and sound last Friday morning to his shiny new platinum silver Jeep Wrangler that he truly earned the hard way. Our family has an extra special reason to celebrate Thanksgiving this year. We wish everyone the same.
