Teams filling fast for Youth Football
Registration this Saturday
Following on the heels of a successful day of youth football registration, organizers with the Williams Youth Football League said they are planning an additional registration this Saturday. The registration will be held at the Williams Safeway from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
According to organizer Fred Heggestad, the first day of registration proved to be a successful one. A number of both cheerleaders and aspiring young football players turned out for a chance to participate in this summer's slate of games.
"I think this was the most productive 'first registration' we've had," Heggestad said. "With the returning players and the first timers, we now have 11 Tiger players and 12 Bengal players. Usually the Bengal players greatly outnumber the Tigers, with us struggling to find enough players to play on the Tigers
by the time practice starts."
The current season, he added, has started out quite different. There are already enough young players on the Tigers team for the league's minimum policy.
"A lot of that is probably due to last year's improvements in the Tigers' game, along with the coach, Jose Zabala, trying to recruit every 5-7-year-old he sees," Heggestad said. "We're only allowed 25 players and 12 cheerleaders on each team, so sign up soon."
Cheerleading positions also fill up quickly, Heggestad said, despite the loss of a number of girls due to age requirements.
"Right now we only have three Tiger cheerleaders and four Bengal cheerleaders," he said. "Last year we had to turn girls away because we were only allowed 12 cheerleaders per team, so I'm sure we'll do okay in that area, too. It sure does add to the atmosphere of the game when you hear those young cheerleaders chanting for their team."
Registration for players cost $85 for the Bengals, $75 for Tigers players and $55 for cheerleaders on both teams. Discounts are given to families who wish to sign up more than one child. For more information on the Youth Football League, call Heggestad at (928) 635-9286.
