Letter: Soldier's homecoming stirs patriotism
To the editor:
A neighbor's son just returned from Iraq and we thank him for his service. Walking past, a friend and I saw a sidewalk reunion so heartfelt and moving, the tears just came.
Of many events and people here, nothing matches the truth of the authentic, joyous relief from his parents. These good people have long kept a vigil seen across our Country, that of yellow ribbons and a photograph on the fence.
Honor belongs to those incredible men and women in harms way, not politicians and the elected passing through. Having just returned form Point Loma's Military Cemetery, honoring our fallen as well as the troops was again brought home as a duty. The spectacular Pacific Ocean shares the shore of Ft. Rosencrans burial grounds. It is the last U.S. land-sight seen by carriers and those deployed, and the first for the fortunate who return. Decades of honorable war-veterans bear witness to the valor and deep loyalty of combat as well as war's devastating loss of life and consequences.
Regardless of our personal views, sincerely acknowledging the sacrifice of those serving is what has united us Americans from the start.
Best wishes to Reiner and Doris Uebel who experienced the ordeal of waiting with such grace and quiet pride.
