Forest Service prepares for summer season
Firefighters, seasonal worker sought on Kaibab
Even though snow is still on the ground and nighttime temperatures are below freezing, the Kaibab National Forest is already preparing for its field season. Forest managers are seeking qualified applicants for firefighting and other seasonal positions for the summer.
Several firefighting positions may be available on each of the forest's three ranger districts. The Williams Ranger District is headquartered out of Williams; the Tusayan Ranger District is headquartered out of Tusayan; and the North Kaibab Ranger District is headquartered out of Fredonia. Firefighting positions potentially available include engine crewmember, helitack crewmember, lookout, prevention technician and more.
Seasonal firefighting positions are part of a large, forestwide firefighting organization that is responsible for locating, responding to and suppressing wildland fires. Other duties could include participation in thinning projects, prescribed burns, wildland fire use fires and other forest projects.
Passing the Work Capacity Test at the "arduous" level is a condition of firefighting employment. The arduous fitness (pack) test consists of completing a three-mile hike within 45 minutes while carrying a 45-pound pack. The firefighting positions also require successful completion of several training courses as a condition of continued employment.
Other seasonal positions potentially available on the Kaibab National Forest this summer include archaeology, recreation and forestry technicians.
