It was a challenging week for the Lady Vikings after their big second place victory in the recent Tonopah Holiday Tournament. The girls took on the Mogollon Mustangs in a couple of close games Jan. 8, beginning with the junior varsity (JV) squad. The JV girls nearly bought a win against the Mustangs as well, but ultimately had to give up the game with a loss. Final score for the match, Williams 23, Mogollon 25. Up next were the varsity girls, who strolled past Mogollon with a final score of 54-14.

Leading scorers for the games were Alma Hernandez with eight points and Kiesha Reed with seven for the JV squad. Senior Kassie Pettit scored 16 points in the varsity match, with Breanne Schulte scoring 13 points for the Ladies.

The girls traveled up Highway 64 for a visit with the Grand Canyon Phantoms Jan. 11. After their loss to Mogollon, the JV girls showed that they had what it takes by defeating the GC girls in what Lady Vikes Coach Frank Schulte called a nail-biter of a victory, as the JV squad took home the win with a final score of Williams 25, Grand Canyon 25.

Schulte credited leading scorers Hernandez, with 12 points, and Niki Maestas, with four points, in helping secure the win. A strong defense became too much for the Grand Canyon girls by the time the varsity team got on the court. The Williams Lady Vikes took the easy win with a final score of Williams 66, Grand Canyon 16. Ashley Bean led the team with 16 points in the game, followed by Kassie Pettit with 13 points.

The Fredonia Lynx visited Williams Jan. 12 to face off against both the Williams JV and varsity girls. The JV girls played a strong game against the visiting team, winning with a final score of 55-32. Things didn't go as well for the Lady Vikes however, when it came time for the varsity match. The Ladies kept on top of the Lynx, but couldn't pull off the win. Final score, Williams 62, Fredonia 63.

Kassie Pettit led the Ladies with 16 points, followed by Amanda Bean with 11 points.

"The varsity game lived up to its expectations, with a back and forth game to the finish," Schulte said. "Turnovers and shooting will be worked on for the next match-up."

The Ladies took on Ash Fork Jan. 15 and will face Seligman at home Friday.
