The Williams High School (WHS) Vikings took a licking from the Fredonia Lynx during a recent away game Feb. 2. Both the Lady Vikes, as well as the Vikes, counted losses in their respective Saturday games. Illness hampered things for the WHS Ladies, according to Coach Frank Schulte, who said a number of girls had been bitten by the recent flu bug circulating throughout Williams. The girls lost their match with a final score of Fredonia 69, Williams 54.

"The girls played a great game considering we only had six varsity players and, out of that, only two were healthy," Schulte said.

The loss put the Lady Vikes second in the division behind Fredonia. The girls will head for regional tournament action, to be held in Fredonia, on Friday. The JV Lady Vikes squad finished up a decent season Feb. 2 as well, ending the season with four wins and two losses.

"The coaches are very impressed with the potential they showed," Schulte said.

The WHS boys, meanwhile, played a tight game against Fredonia as well. The Vikes had the upper hand on the Lynx to end the first quarter of play 12-9, Williams, but Fredonia came back strong in the second quarter, scoring 21 points in the second quarter alone to make the half time score Fredonia 30, Williams 20. By the end of the third quarter of play both teams had scored an additional 12 points, bringing the score to 42-32, Fredonia. Williams rallied in the fourth, scoring 15 points to Fredonia's six, though it still wasn't enough to grab the win. Williams lost the game one point shy, with a final score of Fredonia 48, Williams 47.

No. 34 Enzo Clapper led the Vikes in scoring for the game, with 14 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. No. 24 Guy Forbis came away with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists to end the game. Other top scorers for the Vikings included No. 55 Tyrell Valdivia with nine points, five rebounds, one block and one steal. No. 23 Robbie Puga came away with six points and two rebounds in the Feb. 2 game.
