Become part of the Magic of Christmas in Williams

Although it is early October, for some in our community it's not too early to start thinking about Christmas decorations. A handful of volunteers - approximately 10 Williams area residents - have met on a regular basis throughout the year to plan the Annual Community Christmas Tree Lighting. The volunteers are officially known as the Magic of Christmas in Williams Committee.

For the third consecutive year, the Community Christmas Tree will be located at Second Street and Route 66. The tree will be officially lit at 6 p.m. on Nov. 23, the day after Thanksgiving. On that day, Route 66 will be bustling with activities when the festivities begin at 3 p.m. Entertainment and holiday opportunities will be offered to all. Santa Claus will arrive just in time to witness the tree lighting.

The title sponsor of Magic of Christmas in Williams is the Grand Canyon Railway. The TMD Group - the developers of the proposed Forest Canyon Estates - is donating a tree from their property. Crews from GCR, the city of Williams, APS and the Williams Police Department will cut the tree and place it at Second and Route 66, where it will be decorated.

The Magic of Christmas Committee needs as many volunteers as possible to decorate not only the Community Tree, but other areas of Williams as well. The committee decorates the east end of Williams and Monument Park. Volunteers will decorate throughout October so that all lights - with the exception of the Community Tree - can be lit nightly by Nov. 8, the first day the Polar Express runs.

The Community Christmas Tree has become a tradition in Williams and attracts thousands of visitors each year. The event continues to grow as others throughout the state hear about how we celebrate the holidays in our small town. Walk downtown any night during the holiday season and you will hear the exciting things visitors are saying about us.

Become a part of this growing holiday tradition that is unlike any other in the state. There is much to be done and there is a job for everyone. The Magic of Christmas Committee meets at 5:30 p.m. every Monday at the Grand Canyon Hotel, 145 W. Route 66. The meetings are open to all.
