The Lady Vikings junior varsity basketball team came away victorious after beating St. John's Jan. 21 on their home court. The enviable win was a narrow one with a final score of 38-36 in favor of Williams.

"One of my students asked me how this win felt, and I told him it is much like winning the state championship," said Coach Kristi Fredrickson. "I jumped off the bench and was leaping in the air. It always feels good to beat St. John's."

Intense drama unfolded on the court as the JV team led as many as 8-10 points at times.

Salina Verser scored 11 points. Niki Maestas was crucial in assisting Verser. Ariel Pixley contributed nine points.

"Niki was great at getting the ball to Salina," Fredrickson said. "At one point I thought we might lose. St. John's played hard during the fourth quarter because they did not want to lose."

The varsity ladies did not enjoy the same success as the JV team, losing 27-58 to St. John's.

The shooting percentages were poor at 12 percent. Turnovers were down to 18, and few steals were made.

"Usually we get a lot of steals. St. John's team is just really tough to beat," Fredrickson said, adding that the game was rough on the girls physically due to the aggressiveness of this particular game.

Chesney Grantham bagged a three-pointer while Michelle Sandoval was six for six on the free throw line.

On Jan. 20, the varsity team traveled to Valley Sanders to lose 38-52.

Sandoval scored 20 points total and Grantham scored a three-point shot. The team managed 18 steals and 32 total rebounds.

"We still had a few too many turnovers, but did well otherwise defensively. We played really well," Fredrickson said.

The JV girls didn't fare well with Valley, losing 35-56.

Varsity players Breanne Schulte and Jenise Pettit contributed to the JV game with 10 and 8 points, respectively. Verser outdid herself on blocks and Pixley enjoyed a good day with rebounds.

The Lady Vikes faced Camp Verde yesterday. The ladies play on their home court Friday as they face Many Farms. Junior Varsity play begins at 2:30 p.m. and varsity begins at 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the ladies remain at home to host Pinon. Junior varsity girls will hit the court at 1:30 p.m. and varsity play begins at 4:30 p.m.
