Seeking a new Miss Williams

Applications are being accepted for the Third Annual Miss Williams Route 66 Pageant. This year's pageant will be held April 7 at 7 p.m. at Quality Inn Mountain Ranch. The deadline to enter is Tuesday.

Applications are available at Williams High School, Russ Lyon Realty and the News. Complete applications must be left at Russ Lyon Realty, 145 W. Route 66, Suite B by Tuesday.

Applicants must reside in the 86018 or 86046 zip code areas and currently be attending school. The pageant is open to girls ages 14-19. Candidates must not be married nor have children. Contestants must possess knowledge of Route 66 history.

The winner will compete for the title of Miss Historical Route 66 in Seligman in May.

Computer classes continue

Family tech nights continue every Tuesday at the Williams Elementary-Middle School. Class begins at 6 p.m.

Classes are for parents or relatives and their children. Aunts, uncles, parents and grandparents are encouraged to bring children. A child must accompany an adult to class to help with each project. The cost is $5 per class per family.

On Tuesday learn how to use e-mail. On March 7 learn how to track your child's progress by using PowerSchool.

Free housing workshop offered

Southwest Fair Housing Council presents "Knowing and understanding your housing rights and responsibilities," will be presented at 2 p.m. March 1 at the Williams City Council Chambers, 113 S. First St.

This free workshop will explain housing rights and responsibilities for housing providers and consumers. The workshop is sponsored by the Williams Housing Authority, Williams Head Start and the Southwest Fair Housing Council.

Free tax help offered Tuesday

Free income tax preparation assistance will be available Tuesday from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Williams Senior Center, 850 W. Grant Ave.

Assistance will be provided on a first-come-first-serve basis. The assistance is available to all.

Appointments are also being taken for free tax preparation, sponsored by the Family Resource Center at the Williams Elementary-Middle School in collaboration with the Coconino County Community Services.

Available dates are Tuesday from 2-5 p.m. Income for the year must not exceed $35,000 and no complicated tax situations can be assisted.

Easter Bunny needs help

Planning has began on the annual community Easter Egg Hunt that will be held April 15.

Sponsors are needed in addition to donations of candy, stuffed animals, eggs and anything that is traditionally present during an egg hunt.

Substance abuse topic of summit

The Williams Alliance Against Drug Abuse will co-sponsor a county community summit entitled "Developing Strategies to Reduce and Prevent Substance Abuse." The summit will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. March 10 in Flagstaff at the Woodlands Radisson Hotel.

Williams' community members are encouraged to attend so a comprehensive strategy for the Williams' community can be developed during the day. The information gained will be used by the Alliance's Drug Free Communities grant staff and Alliance members to implement action steps in Williams to reduce or prevent substance abuse.

The community summit registration is free and includes lunch.

Coalition needs information

The Williams Health Coalition is compiling information that will be used to create a Community Family Resource Manual. The manual will contain contact names and telephone numbers of local agencies and services pertaining to health, food and utilities.

The manual should be complete and ready for distribution by the end of June. The Williams Health Coalition continues to meet. The next meeting is tentatively scheduled at noon on March 15 at the Williams City Council Chambers, 113 S. First St.

Survivors group meets March 7

A Men and Women Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse support group will meet at 7 p.m. March 7 at the Williams Senior Center, 850 W. Grant Ave.

WSCSA is an anonymous support group intended to assist survivors through steps of the recovery process. Only survivors can attend and no children are permitted.

Easter food drive under way

The Williams Food Bank invites the community to join in as they prepare for the upcoming Easter holiday. With the help of the community the Williams Food Bank hopes to provide specialty food boxes including spiral sliced hams and holiday extras to as many as 100 eligible families.

A food collection bin will be located inside Safeway through March along with a refrigerated cooler for donating hams.

Local artist Carlos Anton has painted a beautiful oil painting that will be raffled to benefit the food bank. The painting is on display at the National Bank of Arizona. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.

Free GED classes offered

Free adult basic education, GED preparation, citizenship and English as a second language classes are offered this spring at Coconino Community College.

All classes are held at the Williams CCC campus, 636 S. Seventh St.

Find a job tomorrow

The Arizona Workforce Connection/Job Service hosts a weekly One-Stop employment assistance service Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. at the Williams Public Library.

Resume workshops are also offered. The services are free and available to all.

Western auction set for March 18

The Williams Rotary Club is planning its Annual Western Auction that will be held on March 18 at Quality Inn Mountain Ranch.

This popular fun-filled event raises money for student scholarships given out each year to help local youth further their education. Last year's auction grossed over $15,000. The auction's success each year depends on the generosity of members and the community through the donation of items to be auctioned off.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a social hour. The dinner and auction begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 per couple or $30 per person. For tickets, contact any Rotarian or Cindy Christman at 635-4441. To donate prizes call Lindie Rodgers at 635-1314.

Free fitness opportunity available for all

Free fitness classes are now available.

Instructor Georgeanna Koenig leads classes every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at the Holiday Inn, 950 N. Grand Canyon Blvd. Beginners are invited to attend classes at 4:30 p.m. Intermediate level classes begin at 5:30 p.m.
