Lady Vikes anticipate good years to follow
Not unlike the boys, the Williams High School Lady Vikings varsity basketball team came home for the season last week, losing in first-round regionals competition to number-one St. John's, 45-60.
"Playing St. John's is tough, especially at St. John's," admitted Head Coach Kristi Fredrickson.
Trying their best, the girls just couldn't stop St. John's and were only shooting about 20 percent with a halftime deficit of 18-46.
The Lady Vikes finally came alive in the fourth quarter, where they were able to shot 50 percent from the field and rack up 22 points.
"I was very proud of them for coming back like that in the fourth quarter," Fredrickson said.
The girls outscored the competition 27-14 in the second half ‹ unfortunately, it was too late.
Breanne Schulte dominated with 21 points ‹ six of those from two three-pointers. Michelle Sandoval had superior rebounding and was four for five at the free throw line while Alyssa Dennison had six points.
Fredrickson was again pleased with the fourth-quarter performance of the Lady Vikes, who had 14 total steals, only four turnovers in the fourth and 21 for the game, which Fredrickson said isn't bad for high school ball.
As for the season, Fredrickson is proud of her 5-22 overall Lady Vikings.
"I felt we did really well for a young team," Fredrickson said. "It was tough for our seniors to learn to play together with our younger players, but they did it well ‹ just not enough to beat St. John's."
The girls will lose five seniors and won't have any next year, but coaches are confident this year's younger players will be stronger and better next season and are anticipating a great team within the next two.
The News would like to congratulate the Lady Vikings for fighting hard for the fans all season long.
