During the period of Aug. 25-Sept. 7, the Williams Police Department responded to the following incidents:

Criminal damage

Thursday, Aug. 25

• 2:15 p.m. ‹ An officer met with an employee of an excavating company in reference to damage to a Cat 314 trac-hoe excavator.

The Cat brand excavator had been stored in a fenced storage area of a job site south of Country Club Road at Highland Meadows. The employee told the officer that although the storage area was secure, the gate could be manipulated to open wide enough for a small person to fit through.

According to a police report, the excavator had been secured so the suspect would have needed a Cat-type key to enter the cat and start the vehicle. The incident was consistent with similar reports taken previously by the WPD where a suspect had entered and operated Cat brand equipment in the same area during non-business hours. No suspects had previously been identified although evidence was found in the area in the form of bicycle tracks and footprints.

In this case, the suspect started the Cat model excavator and swung the hoe around, striking the excavator parked next to it, damaging it considerably. The damage was estimated to be approximately $3,400.

The case remains open. The WPD requests that anyone with information in reference to these incidents to call either the WPD at (928) 635-4461 or Silent Witness at (928) 774-6111 or (877) 29-CRIME.

Moore and Atherton were transported to the Coconino County Jail.

Suspicious activities

Tuesday, Sept. 6

• 7:04 p.m. ‹ An officer was dispatched to a residence for a report of possible criminal damage. According to a police report, when the officer arrived, he found there had not been any damage to a vehicle, although he observed the center hubcaps were missing.

The reporting person told the officer that an unknown man had been standing near the front of the residence, but did not have a description of the man. The reporting person told the officer the only reason she and her sister believed a man was standing near the residence, was they could smell a strong body odor lingering nearby early in the morning. Neither woman had actually seen a man standing near the corner of the residence.

The women were concerned the man might have been attempting to steal the tires and rims from the vehicle and they wanted police to conduct extra patrols in the early evening hours.

Wednesday, Sept. 7

• 3:50 p.m. ‹ An officer responded to a Williams neighborhood for a report of possible mail theft. The reporting person told the officer that his brother, who lives across the street from him, had possibly been a victim of mail theft.

The man stated that on Sept. 4 at approximately 6 a.m., he had looked out his front window and saw a bald man standing in front of his brother's house. The man told the officer that he saw the bald man open his brother's mailbox and start to go through the mail in the mailbox.

The man stated that the bald man threw some mail back into the box and started to walk away. The man got dressed and ran outside, but the bald man had walked around the corner out of sight.

The man told the officer that while he believes he had seen the bald man before, he did not know who he is. He also stated that he could not tell if anything had been taken.

The man's brother was out of town at the time of the incident. The reporting person told the officer his brother would contact the WPD if anything was determined to be missing.
