Lady Vikes up one, down two in preparation for conference
Things went a little bit better for the Lady Vikings than their male counterparts over the past few games, carving out Grand Canyon 55-24 on Dec. 6.
"The whole team just came together and played much better against them than we did before," said Coach Kristi Fredrickson.
Alyssa Dennison led the team with 18 points, all from the field, with Breanne Schulte making her mark at 12 points.
Unfortunately, the girls couldn't keep the wins coming on Dec. 9, losing to Chino Valley 47-50.
Despite the hustle factor with 20 steals and 41 rebounds, it was other things holding the team down.
"We got in a little foul trouble early on ‹ that hurt us," Fredrickson said, adding that a field shot percentage of just 33 didn't help either.
Jenise Pettit was the points leader with 11, while Schulte and Michelle Sandoval each snagged nine points of their own.
The JV squad lost as well, 21-41 with Ariel Pixley and Selena Verser each getting nine points.
On Dec. 10, the Ladies had to eat another close loss, this one to Seligman, 35-38.
"One of the girls said, 'I can't take another game like that where we get so close and then lose,'" Fredrickson recalled. "We had shot opportunities, but nothing fell."
The Lady Vikes did manage, however, to improve on free throw shooting with an average 70 percent.
Sandoval, usually the rebound leader, led in points this time with 13, and went three for five from the line. Dennison, meanwhile got herself seven rebounds while overall, the team took the hustle prize with an outstanding 17 steals. Unfortunately, though, Williams suffered 15 turnovers.
As with the boys, the girls played Sedona yesterday and will begin conference play against Valley Sanders at home on Friday at 5:30 p.m. with the JV squad taking the parquet at 2:30 p.m.
