“The Kolb Brothers of Grand Canyon,” Wednesday, April 6, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Northern Arizona University’s Cline Library, Flagstaff: Longtime Colorado River guide and multimedia producer Lew Steiger speaks about historic Grand Canyon photographers Emery and Ellsworth Kolb.

The Kolb brothers arrived at the Grand Canyon around the turn of the 20th century, and built a business on the South Rim photographing tourists on mule trips down the Bright Angel Trail.

In 1911-12 the Kolb brothers re-created John Wesley Powell’s 1869 expedition down the Green and Colorado rivers, and they filmed their exploits with a new-fangled motion-picture camera. The resulting film played at Kolb Studio for 75 years, the longest-running film in the history of the movies. The daring adventures of the fearless brothers are chronicled in the vast Emery Kolb Collection at Cline Library.

A former president of the Grand Canyon River Guides Association, Steiger has been running the Colorado River for 30 years. He has produced several documentaries on the Grand Canyon for KAET, Arizona Public Television and nationally for PBS.

Steiger is presently at work on a multimedia CD-ROM about the Kolb Brothers, to be released by the Grand Canyon Association.
