DSL now available at Canyon<br>

According to Qwest’s George Favela, the DSL service being offered by Aspect1 is actually bandwidth purchased from his company at wholesale and resold to end users.

Qwest Communications decided to invest in the local DSL upgrade after Xanterra Parks & Resorts approached the company last fall.

“Five months ago, Xanterra asked for high-speed Internet, so we put out a flyer asking if people were interested,” said Pat Quinn, Qwest president for Arizona.

He said the company received some 260 responses in favor of the service.

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. It uses regular phone lines but is configured to allow much faster data transfer – as much as 26 times faster – than dial-up. Faster speeds apply to both downloading and uploading, said Quinn.

Also, while DSL uses the same lines that provide regular telephone service, it doesn’t interrupt that service. Hooking up requires a special modem, which is provided as part of the DSL package.

For local business owners, the new option is a welcome one.

“I’m excited that Qwest has invested in our area’s development by bringing high-speed broadband services to Grand Canyon/Tusayan,” said Julie Forsyth, president of the Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce. “I have long advocated for investment in this growing area to give our residents another broadband option, and to help ensure our community’s continued growth and success."
