Problem areas, such as the Interstate 40 off-ramp at Grand Canyon Boulevard, will be targeted Saturday during the Williams Fall Cleanup.
“We strongly encourage neighborhoods to get together to clean up their own areas, but one of the things we want to stress the most is that it takes more than two cleanup days per year to keep our community clean,” said Carol Glassburn, chairperson for the Williams Clean & Beautiful Committee.
Glassburn points out that the areas with the most litter are those closest to city entrances and exits, such as highway on-ramps and off-ramps, and reminds the community that “cleanup” doesn’t just mean trash.
“It’s painting a fence or cleaning up the yard or cutting tree limbs, etc. It all makes a big difference to the cleanliness and pride we take in our city,” said Glassburn.
The WCBC, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Williams-Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce, is actually a subchapter of Arizona Clean & Beautiful, a volunteer organization founded in 1984 to keep the state litter-free.
“We provide networking capability for our affiliates, such as Williams, so that different communities can exchange ideas on how to clean up,” said Leandra Lewis, Executive Director of ACB. “We also help by getting contributions to our affiliates and by providing guidance to communities that want to know how they too can stay clean.”
Lewis says she is impressed with the way Williams residents volunteer their time for projects like the fall cleanup and adds she often uses Williams as an example for other prospective affiliates.
In fact, ACB secured a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to institute school recycling programs in seven northern Arizona towns based on Williams School District’s own recycling policy.
In addition to cleanup day, city of Williams residents have received a certificate in their water bills good for dumping one free pickup load of trash and yard debris at the transfer station.
