Work on new well underway<br>

A drilling rig sits ready to begin work on Williams’ latest well in Dogtown.

The Rodeo well, which has had a string of pump failures in the past year, seems to have a problem with carbon dioxide, said Patch Karr, a water consultant hired by the city.

The well apparently has a large amount of carbon dioxide, which when pulled into the pump, can cause severe cavitation. The cavitation causes vibrations that can damage the pump over time, he said.

“This may have been part of the problem all along and we just didn’t pick up on it,” said Karr.

The Rodeo well has presented corrosion problems, causing three previous pumps to be replaced — the latest was a $60,000 stainless-steel pump considered “bullet proof” when it comes to corrosion. The pump has reportedly had some problems due to cavitation however, Karr said.

The Williams City Council is now considering whether to pull the Rodeo pump so that many of its parts, such as tubing, cables and surface equipment, can be used to equip the Dogtown III project. The move could save the city around $32,000 on the Dogtown project, Karr said.

The Rodeo well would be the last to go online once the city begins using well water again.
