Star Party returns<br>to GC for 13th year

The 13th annual Grand Canyon Star Party begins Saturday and runs through June 28 at Yavapai Observation Station.

Under the sponsorship of the National Park Service and the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association, participants from across the country volunteer for the event.

Telescopes such as this one will be set up in the Yavapai Point parking lot Saturday through June 18 for the Grand Canyon Star Party. Visitors can get a good look at the universe at night and the Canyon and sun during the day.

Free star programs will be available nightly and telescopes will be set up to view planets, star clusters, galaxies and nebulae.

Star slide programs begin at 8 p.m., outside Yavapai Observation Station with a question-and-answer session to follow.

Grand Canyon is known as one of the best night sky observing sites in the United States. Visitors should expect spectacular views of the universe, weather permitting.

In addition to night viewing from telescopes set up around the Yavapai Point parking lot and an observing area southwest of the lower portion of the lot, some volunteer astronomers will set up their telescopes during daytime hours to provide up-close views of the Canyon and safe observation of the sun. Daytime activities begin at mid-afternoon.

The NPS urges visitors to use the free shuttle service to visit Yavapai Point and other points of interest around the park.
