Diabetes

support group meets tomorrow

The Williams Diabetes Support Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Williams Senior Center, 850 W. Grant Ave.

The theme of the meeting is “Let’s do Dinner.” Cathy Johnson, registered dietician, will offer tips on how to eat healthier by planning meals. The meeting will include a meal plan that will help by putting the pieces together with samples and recipes.

The group conducts meetings the first Thursday of each month. The Williams Diabetes Support Group was formed to help inform and educate individuals on how to better care for themselves while adjusting to diabetes. In addition to offering support, the group has free brochures available from the American Diabetes Association.

Diabetes planning meeting set for Saturday

The Williams Diabetes Support Group’s planning committee will hold a meeting Feb. 8. The meeting begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Williams City Council Chambers.

The group is still seeking members. Those who are interested can contact Rose Marie Rincon at 635-4897.

Relay for Life meeting tonight

The Williams Relay for Life will hold it’s first meeting of the year at 7 p.m. today at Rosa’s Cantina.

Parents Anonymous meets tonight

Two parent education classes, sponsored by Parents Anonymous, are being held in Williams. The classes will begin at 7 p.m. tonight in the Williams Elementary-Middle School library.

One class being offered, 1,2,3,4 Parents, targets families who have children between the ages of one and four. This program explores developmental stages and games, discipline skills, effective use of time-out, how to communicate with your toddler, family fun and parent self-care.

The second class, Los Ninos Bien Educados, is a special program for Hispanic families. The program presents a variety of methods to help parents raise children that are “bien educados.”

It also teaches parents how to adjust to the expectations of having and raising children in the United States.

All classes are free and are open to everyone. Activities are planned for children attending with their parents.

Sweetheart ball planned for

Feb. 14

The American Legion Cordova Post 13 and the Ladies Auxiliary Unit 13 are hosting their second annual sweetheart dinner and ball Feb. 14. The ball will be held from 8 p.m.-1 a.m. at the legion hut, 425 W. Grant Ave.

Dinner will be served from 5-8 p.m. In addition to a long stemmed red rose for your lady, dinner will include spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, dessert and champagne.

“Pushin 50’s” will provide music and will feature good time oldies, classic rock and country.

The event is open to the public. Although there is no cover charge, a donation of $8 per person or $15 per couple is asked for dinner. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the American Legion Youth programs.

Senior class to host pancake

dinner Feb. 13

The senior class of Williams High School will host their annual pancake dinner at the Canyon Chapel, 720 W. Sheridan Ave., Feb. 13. Dinner will be served from 5:30-7 p.m.

Tickets are being sold now. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Preschool-age children can eat free with one paying adult.

Proceeds from the dinner will help fund the senior trip.

Eat chili on Valentine’s Day

A Valentine’s Day chili supper is planned for Feb. 14. Chili, corn bread, crackers, dessert and a beverage will be served from 6-8 p.m. at the social hall of Community United Methodist Church.

The cost is $5 per adult and $3 for children ages three to 12. Children under three eat free. The cost to each family is a maximum of $15.

improvement forum Feb. 20

A school improvement plan forum will be held Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Williams Elementary-Middle School auditorium.

The Arizona Department of Education labeled the WEMS as an “under-performing” school in September. As a result, administrators were required to formulate a short-term school improvement plan. The plan was submitted to the ADE Jan. 29.

The short-term improvement plan will be discussed as well as long-term plans for improvement. The public is urged to attend.

Vet clinic in Williams Feb. 25

Plateauland Mobile Veterinary Clinic will be in Williams from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 25. The clinic will be held at the city parking lot.

Habitat for Humanity to stage grand opry night Feb. 28

The Williams Habitat for Humanity is hosting a grand opry night Feb. 28. Featuring live country western entertainment, the fun begins at 7 p.m. in the Williams Elementary-Middle School auditorium.

Proceeds from the event will be placed in the group’s building fund.

Williams Habitat acquired two building lots in December. The group hopes to begin construction of a house this year. A minimum of $50,000 is needed to begin construction.

Admission is $3 for adults and $1.50 for children ages 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased in advance by contacting Phil or Ruth Sanzari at 635-0386.

Free financial aid information at College Goal Sunday

With the recent proposed tuition increase of $1,000 per year at Arizona universities, obtaining financial assistance is becoming more crucial. Financial aid can assist families in finding a detour on the road to higher education.

With the free assistance of the College Goal Sunday 2003, professionals, students and parents can explore the possibilities of attending college with alleviated financial burdens.

An annual statewide event, College Goal Sunday, will begin at 2 p.m. Feb. 9 at Coconino Community College, 2800 S. Lone Tree Rd. in Flagstaff.

Financial aid experts will be available to assist students with filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Additional assistance in obtaining federal and state aid, work-study programs and scholarships will be provided.
