During the period of July 25-Aug.3, U.S. Park Rangers at Grand Canyon National Park responded to the following incidents:

Friday, July 25

• Rangers responded to a report of disorderly conduct at Trailer Village. The report was unfounded.

• An emergency medical call was taken the South Kaibab Trail of a 40-year-old man who sustained injuries in a 25-foot vertical fall. Another hiker heard the man moaning below the trail. The man slipped on the edge in the Supai Band due to wet conditions. A ranger hiking out of Phantom Ranch was on the scene within a couple of minutes.

The hiker, who had a severe head laceration and back pain, was evacuated via litter carry to O’Neil Saddle, and then flown out from there. He was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

• An emergency medical call was taken near Pipe Creek of a hiker having difficulty. A Phantom Ranch ranger responded, but a hiker could not be located in the area.

Saturday, July 26

• One of several loose stones from the retaining wall surrounding Kolb Studio was pushed off the wall. The rock rolled into the structure through a window, breaking the historic restroom sink.

• A blue van broke down on the South Entrance Road near the entrance station. The driver was unable to pull completely off the road and was obstructing traffic. Rangers conducted traffic control until the vehicle could be moved.

• Rangers responded to a report of five individuals shooting pellet guns at tin cans in the Phantom Ranch area. The individuals were located, issued verbal warnings and secured their weapons away.

Sunday, July 27

• An eight-year-old female had a bicycle accident on West Rim Drive near the interchange. First aid was provided and the girl’s parents transported her to Flagstaff Medical Center.

• A six-year-old male was stung by an insect. His family sought advice and treatment recomendations from rangers.

• A report was taken of a 24-year-old male on a river trip suffering from an advanced infection on the knee. The male had been experiencing symptoms for four-five days around the knee when swelling began to spread to his thigh. The patient was treated and airlifted in a helicopter to the South Rim. The patient refused further medical care once on the South Rim.

• Rangers assisted a hiker suffering from heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Monday, July 28

• Rangers contacted and cited Jack Yancick of Grand Canyon on a charge of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, gift of alcohol to a minor and possession of a controlled substance.

Tuesday, July 29

• Rangers assisted a Coconino County Sheriff’s deputy with a domestic violence call.

• Rangers responded to Colter Hall where a white male had forced open a window and cut a screen with a knife. The dorm proctor confronted the man and scared him away.

• A call was received from Roaring Springs for two medical problems. One patient had a minor knee injury and was transported by mule.

The second patient, a 39-year-old female, was airlifted to the South Rim for evaluation of heat exhaustion. Rangers from the North Rim responded on foot to assist remaining group members back to the North Kaibab trailhead. The group had ran out of water.

Wednesday, July 30

• Rangers received a report of an apartment resident attempting to break into a storage shed. The suspect was later identified as a Qwest employee who did not have a key to the building and was attempting to gain access. The man was later let into the building by Arizona Public Service.

• Rangers received a report of an injured coyote. Rangers dispatched the coyote.

Thursday, July 31

• Rangers participated in firearms qualifications at the South Rim Range.

• Rangers responded to a report of a peeping Tom in the Maswik Cabins area. Rangers located the suspect, who was found to be a disoriented intoxicated male. The suspect received a verbal warning.

Sunday, Aug. 3

• Rangers took a report of a bicycle theft from outside of the Thunderbird Lodge.

• A report was taken of a theft of $920 cash from a park employee’s room. The case remains under investigation.

• The Kane County Sheriff’s Office requested the National Park Service Helicopter 210 respond to an all-terrain vehicle roll-over accident eight miles south of Jacob’s Lake.

The patient was a 19-year-old male with head and chest injuries. The helicopter responded with a paramedic, treating the patient and airlifting him to the South Rim Helibase. The patient was transferred to the Guardian Angel One air ambulance.
