Diamondbacks take LL Majors tournament title
For the first time since a postseason tournament was implemented in Little League Majors four years ago, a Williams team won the championship game.
The Diamondbacks defeated the Parks Pirates, 12-5, Saturday afternoon to become the first Williams team to wear the tournament crown. And the D-Backs are the first team from Williams to win a league championship of any type since the Astros went 12-3 to finish first in 1998, the last year a tournament was not played.
Previous tournament champions include the Grand Canyon Cardinals in 1999, Seligman Indians in 2000 and the Pirates in 2001.
The Ash Fork Devil Rays were the team to beat heading into the tournament. The Devil Rays had gone through the regular season with a perfect 12-0 record.
The D-Backs avoided the Devil Rays entirely in the tournament with the Ash Fork squad losing twice to Parks, 11-10 and 13-9.
The Devil Rays became the second team in the last four years to go undefeated during the regular season only to lose in the playoffs. Seligman met that same fate in 1999.
