During the period of March 8-13, U.S. Park Rangers at Grand Canyon National Park responded to the following incidents:

Friday, March 8

o Rangers responded to a report of a vehicle in a ditch off South Entrance Road. The vehicle, which slid off because of snow and ice, was returned to the roadway by a tow truck.

o An emergency medical call was taken (site not reported) of a 72-year-old woman with difficulty breathing. The woman was transferred to Medic 8.

Saturday, March 9

o Rangers responded to a report of a coyote begging food from visitors and stopping traffic for handouts in the Twin Overlooks area.

o Rangers responded to a report of vandalism to a Grand Canyon residence. Evidence was collected and suspects were identified. The investigation was continuing.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Canyon View Information Plaza of a child with diarrhea. The parents refused treatment and were given directions to Flagstaff Medical Center.

o Donald Paya, 34, Peach Springs, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after he ran his truck off Center Road at the its intersection with Market Plaza Road. There were no injuries.

o Rangers found a man lying beside South Entrance Road and stopped to do a welfare check. The man, who stated he was tired from walking and resting, was transported to a motel in Tusayan.

o Katherine Delis, 20, Van Nuys, Calif., was cited for possession of a controlled substance after being contacted in Mather Campground.

o Jessica Pick, 20, Van Nuys, Calif., was cited with possession of drug paraphernalia after being contacted in Mather Campground.

o An emergency medical call was taken at the bottom of Jacob’s Ladder of a 49-year-old man complaining of weakness and fatigue. The man was not requesting assistance, but did need his personal medications which he had left on the rim. A ranger met the man at the 1.5-mile resthouse with his medications. Within 15 minutes of taking the medications, the man had regained his energy and stride and topped out.

Sunday, March 10

o Rangers responded to a suspicious activity situation involving a red Toyota parked just south of the South Entrance Station. The vehicle remained parked on the road shoulder and two men ages 20-25 dressed in camouflage exited the car several times. The men were seen entering and exiting the forest and walking around their vehicle. After about 15 minutes, the vehicle entered the park and proceeded north on South Entrance Road. Responding rangers in the village and at Desert View were unable to locate the vehicle.

o Rangers responded to a motor-vehicle accident at the South Entrance Station. Drivers exchange information; there was no visible damage.

o An emergency medical call was taken (site not reported) of a 15-month-old boy who slipped in a bathtub and struck his head, causing an inch-long laceration over his right eye. The boy’s father refused treatment.

Monday, March 11

o Rangers responded to a motor-vehicle accident in the Yavapai Observation Station parking lot. Drivers exchanged information; there were no injuries.

o Rangers responded to a motor-vehicle accident in front of Maswik Lodge North building No. 3. A recreation vehicle hit a transformer and knocked out power.

o Felix Grey, 27, Grand Canyon, was cited for under the influence of alcohol and trespassing at Colter Hall.

o An emergency medical call was taken at the El Tovar Hotel of a 19-year-old woman complaining of nausea and vomiting. The woman was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

o Rangers responded to a panic alarm at Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic. Construction workers set the system off while leaving for the night.

o Rangers provided assistance to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office to respond to a burglary alarm at Papillon Helicopters.

Tuesday, March 12

o Rangers received several more calls of coyotes approaching visitors and creating hazardous driving conditions near Mather Point, Canyon View Information Plaza and the Twin Overlooks on Desert View Drive.

o Rangers responded to a disorderly conduct situation in the Bright Angel Lodge lobby involving an upset visitor. The disagreement was settled and the visitor left.

o An emergency medical call was taken at the El Tovar Hotel of a 56-year-old man who received a one-inch laceration to his finger while using a knife to try to open a wine bottle. The man was transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

o James Decker, 20, West Chicago, Ill., was cited for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia after being contacted in Mather Campground.

o Ernest Sarkipato, 21, Grand Rapids, Mich., was cited for possession of a controlled substance after being contacted in Mather Campground.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Tip Off on the South Kaibab Trail of a 49-year-old man complaining of muscle fatigue. The man was advised to eat, rest and continue his hike out.

Wednesday, March 13

o An emergency medical call was taken at Albright Training Center of a 42-year-old woman experiencing a fainting episode. The woman refused treatment.

o Rangers responded to Grand Canyon School for an ongoing investigation, the nature of which was not identified.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Canyon View Information Plaza of a 50-year-old woman who was conscious but not responsive. The woman was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

o Sherri Craig, 35, Grand Canyon, was charged with misappropriation of property following an investigation.

o Rangers responded to a report of property damage in Trailer Village to the street sign "P" and also the mounted light on top of it. Rangers believe a nearby dumpster, possibly hit by a vehicle, was pushed into the sign.

o Matthew D. Holzer, 20, Bozeman, Mont., was cited for minor consumption of alcohol after being contacted at the Mather Campground kiosk.

o Rangers responded to a disorderly conduct situation involving a party at Victor Annex. The people involved were celebrating by spraying beer on each other.

o John Boyce, 27, (city of residence not reported), was cited for disorderly conduct. Boyce, who was intoxicated, allegedly urinated in a sink in the women’s bathroom.

o Rangers responded to a disorderly conduct situation involving a 24-year-old man and 41-year-old woman arguing outside Maswik bar. Both were issued verbal warnings.

o An emergency medical call was taken less than a mile down the Bright Angel Trail of a 55-year-old man experiencing chest pain. The man said his automatic defibrillator activated twice during his hike. He was assisted to the rim and transported via Guardian ambulance to Flagstaff Medical Center.

o Rangers received a report from the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center via the Arizona state search-and-rescue coordinator of two distress signals from an aircraft near Tuweep Ranger Station. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Department requested the dispatch of a search-and-rescue unit from Colorado City to investigate. However, the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center subsequently reported the distress signals had ceased and there were no reports of any overdue aircraft.

o Rangers responded to a report on the Rim Trail between the El Tovar Hotel and Yavapai Museum of a 49-year-old woman who was separated from her family. The woman’s husband and daughter made the report three hours after she was last seen. The woman was found in the El Tovar Hotel lobby.

o Rangers reported that due to high winds, NPS helicopter 210 was grounded for the day.
