Shots fired into Williams house
The first day of the spring semester, Jan. 14, is also the opening day for the Coconino Community College — Williams Campus.
CCC has had a presence in town for the last 11 years. In October of last year, it broke ground for the new facility. Next semester the brand new CCC satellite campus will open its doors to students in Williams.
“The building is complete and we’re pretty much ready to take possession,” said Mike Lainoff, CCC’s dean of extended learning. “We do have classes scheduled there at the start of the spring semester.
“Private ground school for aviation and intro to sociology will be offered in the new building.”
There are 19 other classes CCC is offering in Williams in January (See graphic on Page 8A for a complete list). Lainoff said some of these would also be moved to the new campus.
The 3,700 square foot facility includes three classrooms, bathrooms, two offices, maintenance, storage and a control room. One classroom will have a 12-computer workstation with internet access. Another will have satellite downlink and video conferencing/telecomm capabilities.
“The Williams site will be hooked to two Flagstaff sites, the Grand Canyon, Page and Tuba City with live interactive video between the sites,” Lainoff said. “There will be two 36-inch screen monitors, one with a camera, ceiling mounted microphones and another camera mounted on the back wall.
“For the most part, students here in Williams won’t have a teacher on-site.”
In the past, low student numbers meant the cancellation of class.
“Low enrollment won’t be a problem in the future because they’ll be a part of a districtwide class,” Lainoff said.
He said the videoconferencing classes would primarily originate from CCC-Flagstaff or Tuba City.
The computer lab is open to all CCC students, but the goal is for it to be used for classes available over the world wide web.
“The purpose of this lab is to basically allow students to work individually on classes offered over the internet,” Lainoff said. “We’ll be offering 17 classes over the web (in the spring).”
Lainoff said voters passed a $25 million bond in November 1997, which enabled CCC to construct a Flagstaff campus as well as distance learning centers in Williams, Grand Canyon and Page. Williams Unified School District Governing Board granted CCC a 99-year lease on the land, located just south of the high school football field on the corner of Seventh and Oak streets.
The price tag for all of the distance learning centers is $2.8 million. The final cost for the CCC-Williams facility is expected to be close to $837,000.
“We’re working with AmeriCorps to hire our site assistant,” said Lainoff. “This person will assist with the lab and be the on-site presence.”
The CCC-Williams campus will also be offering fast-track classes during the second part of the spring semester and again during a May session.
Placement testing is Jan. 3 at the Williams facility. Walk in registration is Jan. 5 on campus from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Classes start Jan. 14. Add/drop week is Jan. 14-25. Call Lori Edes, Williams CCC coordinator, at 635-4963, to register or for more information.
