Letter: Medical marijuana dispensary alarms resident

To the editor:

In the Williams News last week was a notice of public hearing that should concern many residents of our community. It stated the city of Williams Planning and Zoning is having a public hearing on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers regarding having a medical marijuana dispensary at the previously Pouquette Realty building on the corner of Route 66 and Lewis Street. All interested persons may attend and address their comments to the commission/city council.

Also on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. the city council will act upon the planning and zoning request. You may attend both meetings and express your desire for our community.

This may be your only chance to have the commission and council members realize the direction you want our city to grow.

Ruth Sanzari

Williams, Ariz.

In Redding, California a town of 85,000 that legalized medical marijuana, there are 40,000 registered medical marijuana patients and the crime rate has soared. In Colorado the state has gotten into the regulation of marijuana from grower to user. If you decide to legalize it do your homework on setting restrictions.

Hey Mack

Did they raise the speed limit? Since when does it only take 20 minutes to drive 30 miles to Flag? You must be smokin something.

Lets look at the REALITY... Marijuana is ALREADY IS YOUR TOWN. A legal dispensery will eliminate the illegal business of buying, selling and growing marijuana while increasing tax revenue.

Do not be naive, its ALREADY HERE, has been forever, next door, across the street, down the block and across town. It will be here with or without a dispensary so why not benefit from the taxes and help remove the danger of the illegal trade of marijuana?

I will certainly vote FOR those in favor of the dispensary.

Sorry Gary, you're wrong. Unless you call everyone who lives in Williams, on wither they think marijuana would be an asset to our tourist town and children then your feelings don't matter or count. Who are you, anyway? Just because you say you "think" everyone in town or most want the weed doesn't mean everyone agrees with you. TO ALL YOU DRUG USERS, GET IN YOUR CAR AND CAR POOLTO FLAGSTAFF ON A SUNDAY. IT SHOULD TAKE 20 minutes to get there. oh and another thing, if this drug is so wonderful, the hospitals would distribute it.

I can't believe all the rucus this has caused. My Husband was diagnosed with cancer in 1998 Thank goodness he beat it. But he didn't do it with out some help from THC. The drug found in Marijauna. He tried the pill form and he vomitied it back up. he went from 141 lbs. to 92lbs. he is 6'1". So you can imagine how skin and bones were showing. Coming from a Strict Christian family it was definitly against our religion to try it. But in my desperation we did and he was able to eat thanksgiving dinner 3 weeks after thanksgiving. I am thankful to the doctor who prescribed it and to the person he put us in touch with to get it for helping save my husbands life. SO please to all you naysayers check your facts and many people CARE if it were helping them. And YOU would TOO if you were in need of it or your loved one was. If you are afraid that your children will try to get some than maybe you should be having a talk with them about it instead of sounding off on here.

Article comment by: Torn and Conflicted

I am torn on the idea behind a dispensary possibly being located in Williams. I support medical marijuana for those who TRULY need it (read: NOT the way California does it and let anyone with a paper cut get their card). I have someone very close to me who uses it, after nearly dying from an overdose of Oxycodone or one of those other prescription pain killers. I 100% support those with real, serious medical issues that medical marijuana helps.

We must remember, though, that the voters of Arizona have passed this MULTIPLE times. The State of Arizona has strict rules in place for these places. Our City Council passed unanimously an ordinance specifically for these types of businesses. This business appears to meet these restrictions put in place by our current city leadership. If you are asking our Council to deny this business just because you "don't like it" and "think of the children", I expect to see you at every Council Meeting every time someone wants a liquor license. Alcohol is far more damaging to our town (and also our youth) than someone with glaucoma/cancer/chronic pain who is seeking their medical marijuana to consume in the comfort of their own home.

I must say, I personally don't want to see this in Williams. We're a small town that this just doesn't fit, especially on Route 66 surrounded by high-traffic tourist areas (Wild West Junction and Twisters). I would recommend that the gentleman who is attempting to bring this to town instead try to partner with someone in Flagstaff to have a legal, safe dispensary in a good, medical location.

Some seriously uninformed people commenting here, but I get the feeling it's just a few people who are rabidly against it, strictly for personal reasons. You can't please everyone though, and I can see that the informed people far outnumber the willfully ignorant. Do REAL research into the "effects" of a dispensary, instead of skimming headlines of your preferred news channel. These aren't going to harm anyone. They provide a genuine service to genuine patients. Do your research, don't be a sheep.

Keep up the good work Williams!

Everyone having problems with this need to get over themselves. You can't deny a patient's needs. It's not like Williams is so special that they should have different laws. Who cares if it's a small town? At least that only means 1 dispensary. Get your facts straight about pot and be pro-cannibus! There's nothing wrong with feeling good. And for all you freaking out about your kids, it's not like they can get a card unless they are 18 or older. And if they are 18 or older, give it up and let them make their own choices. The marijuana caregivers aren't "preying" on your children. You're delusional. They're helping people whether you like it or not. Get over yourselves.

Do your research and you will find the same information, but they do say that ignorance is bliss!! There are many medical benefits in marijuana including pain management, controlling seizures, increases appetite and it can help slow the growth of tumors. It is a natural plant that does not have to have anything added to it to make it effective. It is a safer healthier alternative to legal drugs. How is a dispensary going to give our kids something to do? Are you saying that a business has more influence over our children than we do? I hope you're not a parent because is sounds like your kids are weak minded, easily influenced and have no regard for their parents!

Drive 20 minutes to Flagstaff to get your stinkin junk. Having something in our small town serving only a few is cost prohibitive, not to mention ugly and will give our children something to do. NOT!

Article comment by: Truth You Say

It was voted on as a State issue but it hasn't been approved in Williams and doesn't have to be. This is a private enterprise trying to make money. That's all. It could be done out of town or in Flagstaff. How many residents of this little town would need such a place? Start by putting your thinking caps on people. Quit lying with your numbers. This is a stupid idea for our little town.

This proposition was passed 2 years ago by the majority of Arizona voters. This is still America right? Voting still matters right? I would also like to know what these false truths are. Many people smoke marijuana, illegally, just like many people use prescription medication, illegally. Which, by the way, kills an average of 750,000 people a year, marijuana? Zero!! But I don't see anybody trying to shut down the local pharmacy, as they had out opiates. You say we'll be a town of drugs and booze, open your eyes! The biggest business in town is alcohol and it always has been! How can you say it is run by drug rings? Did you even read the article? The man has worked in Williams and Ash Fork for years, in realty not drug dealing. How can you say who cares if it helps sick people? What kind of uncaring person are you? People need to take a step back and realize this is for medicine, not recreation. If you are worried about your kids being so easily influenced, you need to be the bigger influence in their life because it's not going to come from the medical dispensaries but from classmates and peers. Take responsibity for yourselves before you try and make choices for others.
