Williams High School tenth grader Tori Walters recently earned a spot on the Arizona Music Educators Association's (AMEA) High School Northwest All-Regional Choir.

Over the weekend of Jan. 25, Walters auditioned for the regional choir. Out of the more than 300 people who auditioned for the All Regional Choir, about 100 made the cut. Of the roughly 100 altos who auditioned, Walters was one of 25 people accepted.

"During the tryouts you need to be able to sight read and be able to sing a song for a solo," she said.

For Walters' solo, she sang the Italian song "Caro Mio Ben."

Regional vocal chairperson and Chino Valley High School music teacher Dee Wilkins said the audition process is rigorous, with independent judges evaluating a singer's vocal tone and attention to detail in their solo, in addition to the sight reading portion, which he called challenging.

"It's looking for people who are real musicians," he said, adding that making the choir is a great honor.

In February, the Northwest All-Regional Choir will meet to practice for a performance, which will take place at 3 p.m. Feb. 15 at Prescott High School.

Wilkins said practicing for the performance is hard work, but also fun.

"The culmination is they get to make music," he said. "They create something beautiful with people they only met two days earlier. So it's really a special event."

Walters is looking forward to that event.

"When I sing I like the way I feel on stage and just expressing myself through music," she said.

Walters said she has been singing "since I could talk, since I was very little." Singing isn't just a hobby for her.

"I want to become a singer when I grow up or work in theater, like Broadway or something," she said.

Walters has been taking vocal lessons at Northern Arizona University for about the past four months.

Next, she has her sights set on auditioning for the All-State Choir March 7-8.
