WILLIAMS, Ariz. - The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International recently recognized the Williams Rotary Club for supporting the organization's annual fund.

The annual fund supports local and international Rotary projects. Rotary International presented the Williams club with a banner recognizing its financial support for the 2011-2012 year.

A letter from Eric Schmelling, fund development manager for the Rotary Foundation, described the three possible distinctions clubs could earn, of which the Williams Rotary earned all three:

"One of only 1,550 clubs to achieve Top Three Highest in Per Capita Annual Giving honors in their district (only clubs with a minimum $50 per capita were eligible);

One of only 1,064 clubs worldwide to attain status as a 100% Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member Club (club must achieve 100 percent of all active members personally contributing $100 or more to the Annual Fund during the Rotary year);

One of only 2,114 clubs worldwide to become an Every Rotarian, Every Year Club (club must have achieved a $100 per capita with every active member making a personal contribution of some amount to the Annual Fund)."

There are 34,529 Rotary clubs internationally, according to the letter.

The Williams Rotary Club has about 30 members and was the top contributor in the state per capita, said Williams Rotary President Steve Lovas.

"It's a good feeling," Lovas said. "It's nice that we've got such a giving club."

For certain projects, Rotary International will match the amount of money local Rotary clubs raise with money from its annual fund, explained Jim Bultema, Williams Rotary member and assistant governor for the Northern Arizona District of Rotary International.

"It pays to give," he said.

The Williams Rotary Club provides between $12,000 and $15,000 in scholarship money for high school seniors going on to college or trade schools. The club is also working on a drivers training education program, to include a driving simulator and classroom instruction.

"That's one of the exciting things about giving is to get money back and do these projects," Bultema said.

Bultema said club members are excited about the distinction.

"This is such an award for Williams," he said. "It means so much to the club."
