WILLIAMS, Ariz. - The Williams High School boys' baseball team beat Sedona 1-0 on April 9 in a game where the Vikings left 10 runners stranded on base but a solid defense netted them the win.

Head coach Phillip Echeverria said that Joaquin Salaz threw a great game.

"He is definitely developing into that number two pitcher that we needed," he said.

The Vikings played outstanding defense but offensively they left 10 players on base throughout seven innings. Echeverria said the team had scoring opportunities but the Vikes could not capitalize on them.

"We didn't have many clutch hits," Echeverria said. "We didn't have guys drive runs in."

Leo Lopez drove in the only run for the Vikings.

Echeverria said that he was proud of the Vikes' pitching performance and how the defense played. He said that it is nice to play a low scoring game when the Vikings come out on the winning side.

"The kids gain a little confidence playing that type of ball game," he said.

Up next this week are two tough games for the Vikings - Northland Preparatory Academy today and Chino Valley on Thursday. Both games will be played in Williams.

Echeverria said that he hopes the Vikes hit the ball a little better in tough situations and continue to play good defense. He said their number two pitcher will play today and Kohl Nixon will pitch on Thursday.

"We hope for good pitching performances," Echeverria said.

The Vikings are 0-9 against Chino Valley but Echeverria said the more important game for the Vikings is against Northland Prep because it is a section game for the Vikes. The Vikings are 5-0 in the section IV with five section games left in the season.

"Again, our number one goal is to win the section championship so we need to take care of our section games," Echeverria said.

The Vikes will play Bagdad on April 22 in Bagdad.

The Vikings are 14-7 overall and 10-2 in PowerPoint rankings. They are seeded No. 6.
