Crews responded June 17 to the the Echo Fire located south of Interstate 40 in the north east corner of Williams just off city property on the Kaibab National Forest. Fire officials sent two city fire trucks, two U.S. Forest Service engines, a water tender and two patrol units to the fire.

The fire is less than two acres. Firefighters have not determined the cause of the fire.

The fire is relatively small because of a prescribed burn about two years ago that left the area without ground fuel.

According to the Forest service, crews are keeping fire growth to a minimum with hoses surrounding the fire at this time. People should expect to see small amounts of smoke from Williams and along portions of I-40.

Smoke from the Doce fire on the Prescott National Forest approximately 8 miles northwest of Prescott is causing hazy conditions in Williams. The Forest Service reports that the fire is about 600 acres and is active to the northeast. Air tankers, helicopters, type-1 crews, and type-2 initial attack crews are responding to the fire.

Kaibab National Forest fire lookouts report smoke traveling from the southwest to the northeast at this time. The forecast shows south-southwest wind 10 to 15 mph becoming light south in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 29 mph.
