WILLIAMS, Ariz. - Alyssa Dennison, the new Williams Unified School District Governing Board member, said she is looking forward to getting started in her new role.

Dennison has lived in Williams for most of her life. She works as a youth care worker at the Coconino County Juvenile Detention Center in Flagstaff.

"We help the kids figure out what they're going to need to succeed when they get out of here," she said. Dennison explained that detention is a very controlled environment, and some of the youths may need to learn life skills for when they are released.

Dennison attended Northern Arizona University for four years. She graduated in 2010 with a degree in criminology and criminal justice. She is currently working toward a master's degree from Arizona State University in the same field.

Dennison said she applied for the governing board seat to help kids.

"I just want to help try to make a difference, try to help affect kids in another way," she said, adding that she works with kids in a limited setting in her job.

"I went to Williams High School and had a good experience there with the teachers and staff and I want to give back."

The first governing board meeting of the new year is today.

"I'm excited to get in there and see what it's all about and see what we can do," she said.

Dennison said she does not have any specific goals for her time on the board.

"I think it's best to go in with an open mind," she said.
